Chapter 7 - The Man Who Fed the Anger

Graham Locke finally agreed to meet.
He had represented Charles.
Then Claire.
Then Victoria.
That alone should have disqualified him from half the decisions he made.
I met him with counsel present.
“You told Victoria something about the trust.”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“She asked what happened if Lily died before twenty-one.”
My jaw tightened.
“And you answered?”
“I’m an attorney.”
“You’re also a human being.”
He looked away.
“What did you say?”
“I explained the reversion.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
Three months.
Not at the party.
Not after an argument.
Months before the pool.
Then:
“She asked whether marrying you would give her standing to challenge the trust.”
My stomach turned.
“What did you tell her?”
“That marriage would not give her ownership, but it might make settlement easier if you supported her.”
Everything became clear.
Victoria had planned to marry me.
Then persuade me to pressure Lily’s trustees.
The pool shove was not necessarily the original plan.
The original plan was quieter.
Legal.
Emotional.

Inside the family.
That almost frightened me more.
