Chapter 19 - Twenty-One

Lily turned twenty-one on a warm June morning.

Monroe Capital shares transferred into her control.

Their value had grown beyond three hundred million dollars.

She stared at the papers.

Then at me.

“I don’t want to run a company.”

I laughed.

“Then don’t.”

“Seriously?”

“Your mother left you assets.”

“She did not leave you an obligation to become her.”

Lily appointed professional management.

Kept strategic voting rights.

Expanded the Sophie Heart Foundation.

Then created a second program.

The Claire Monroe Family Justice Fund.

It helped young beneficiaries get independent legal counsel when family disputes threatened their inheritance or safety.

“Why?” I asked.

She shrugged.

“Because money makes people weird.”

I laughed.

“Your mother would approve.”

Then Lily did one more thing.

She invited Victoria to become an anonymous donor advisor to the heart foundation.

No control.

No access to Lily’s finances.

A narrow boundary.

Victoria accepted.

She never asked for more.

That was how trust began.

Not restored.

Begun.
