Chapter 6 - THE INTERCEPTION AT JFK

At 6:15 AM, on the private executive tarmac of Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, a twin-engine Gulfstream G650 was idling its engines, preparing for immediate departure to Switzerland.

Dr. Evelyn Vance—wearing a dark mink coat, oversized designer sunglasses, and carrying an aluminum briefcase containing three million dollars in bearer bonds—hurried up the mobile boarding stairs.

"Captain, close the cabin doors immediately," Evelyn urged the flight attendant, her voice trembling with frantic panic. "We have an emergency medical clearance window."

SCREECH!

Four black armored tactical trucks, flanked by six marked Port Authority Police interceptors with sirens blaring, smashed through the security perimeter gates of the runway, sliding broadside across the tarmac to block the Gulfstream’s nose gear.

Thirty armed federal tactical operators surrounded the aircraft, weapons raised.

"FEDERAL MARSHALS! SHUT DOWN THE ENGINES AND STEP AWAY FROM THE AIR STAIRS!"

Evelyn Vance froze on the top step of the boarding ramp. Her aluminum briefcase slipped from her manicured fingers, bouncing down the metal stairs, popping open on the wet concrete, spilling bearer bonds and counterfeit medical passports across the tarmac.

Stepping out of the lead armored vehicle, wearing a long charcoal wool coat, was Matteo Varric.

Beside him walked Dante, his chief of enforcement, and Senior Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Sterling.

Evelyn backed against the cabin door, clutching her throat, her face pale as a corpse.

"Matteo... please!" Evelyn screamed over the roar of the idling jet engines. "Sofia threatened my family! She said if I didn't swap the baby, she would have her men burn my clinic down!"

"You took a newborn child from a mother's chest for two million dollars, Evelyn," Matteo said, his voice carrying effortlessly through the morning air. "You signed a death certificate for a living child."

Sarah Sterling stepped forward, holding up a certified federal arrest warrant.

"Dr. Evelyn Vance," Prosecutor Sterling declared. "You are under arrest for Federal Kidnapping, Deprivation of Civil Rights under Color of Medical Authority, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Conspiracy to Defraud an Estate."

CLICK. CLICK.

The heavy-gauge steel handcuffs snapped shut over Evelyn’s wrists as she was hauled down the boarding stairs in tears, her designer coat dragging in the jet-fuel puddles of the runway.

Matteo watched her pushed into the transport van without a shred of pity.

"Dante," Matteo commanded. "Secure the briefcase. Route every dollar to the children's trauma wing at Mount Sinai."

"Right away, Boss."
