Chapter 13 - THE ENCRYPTED LEDGER
At 2:00 AM, inside the subterranean tactical operations suite beneath the Oyster Bay estate, the room was bathed in the pale blue glow of six curved ultra-high-definition monitors.
Matteo sat at the central command console beside Chief Digital Forensics Auditor Marcus Cole, who had arrived under federal escort from Manhattan.
On the center screen, the encrypted banking mainframe of Banque Privée de Genève was undergoing a forced federal cryptographic decryption.
"The paper trail is undeniable, Mr. Varric," Marcus Cole announced, tapping his mechanical keyboard with rapid, surgical precision. "The Aegis-Nascita trust wasn't established for legitimate corporate holdings. It was a private extortion slush fund created by Sofia Varric and Evelyn Vance eight years ago."
Marcus brought up three high-resolution scans of signed clinical logs from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital:
Document Alpha: The original, unredacted delivery manifest from October 14th, confirming the birth of an eight-pound, two-ounce boy to Liana Graves, bearing the infant's original footprint and the serial number of the hidden ankle transponder.
Document Beta: A wire transfer authorization of four million dollars paid to Dr. Harold Sterling to issue the forged stillbirth certificate and execute the infant swap.
Document Gamma: A recorded audio file extracted from Sofia Varric’s encrypted Swiss safe deposit box, timestamped twenty-two days after the swap.
Matteo hit the audio playback key.
Sofia’s sharp, venomous voice resonated through the studio speakers:
“The Graves girl has no family and zero money. She’s already buried the decoy child in Queens. In two years, when Matteo signs the maritime succession over to Nico, the boy’s trust will be completely under my proxy. If Matteo ever suspects a thing, Christian will release the foreign audit and ruin him.”
Assistant US Attorney Sarah Jenkins walked into the operations room, holding a freshly stamped federal order from the Chief Judge of the Southern District of New York.
"The federal grand jury unsealed the superseding indictment twenty minutes ago, Matteo," Prosecutor Jenkins stated with absolute authority. "Christian Dupond isn't holding a press conference tomorrow. He is being taken into custody at 6:00 AM for international money laundering, racketeering, and extortion."

"Do not let him make bail, Sarah," Matteo said softly. "The Varric name belongs to my son now. And nobody will ever threaten his peace again."
