Chapter 16 - THE SOVEREIGN VOWS

Three months later, on a warm, golden afternoon in late May, the oceanfront lawn of the Oyster Bay estate was transformed into a paradise of blooming white hydrangeas, fresh jasmine, and flowing ivory silk.

Two hundred guests—the pediatric nurses who had cared for Nico, the detectives who had uncovered the truth, federal judges, and close community friends—sat on white mahogany chairs facing the sparkling blue waters of Long Island Sound.

Down the cedar runner walked Matteo Varric, dressed in a custom-tailored black bespoke tuxedo, his posture towering, proud, and radiating an ocean of deep, sacred emotion.

Walking beside him, holding his father’s index finger with total confidence, was two-and-a-half-year-old Nico.

Nico wore an exquisite miniature tuxedo with a silver silk bow tie, carrying a satin pillow bearing two platinum wedding bands, smiling brightly as the guests murmured in joyful awe.

Then, the string quartet shifted to the rich, soaring chords of Pachelbel’s Canon in D.

The double French doors of the manor opened.

Walking down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Jonathan Mercer was Liana.

She was breathtaking in an exquisite, hand-stitched ivory lace gown that flowed around her silhouette like liquid starlight, her dark veil catching the gentle ocean breeze, her hazel eyes locked onto Matteo with diamond-pure devotion.

Matteo’s breath caught in his throat. A single, silent tear tracked down his cheek as he watched the woman who had saved his soul walk toward him under the sun.

When she reached the altar, Matteo took both of her hands into his, kneeling down slightly so Nico could stand between them.

"Liana," Matteo spoke, his deep baritone carrying across the quiet lawn. "One year ago, you walked into my home carrying the heaviest grief a mother could bear. You brought truth into the darkness, you healed my son with a single touch, and you gave me a reason to live with honor. As long as I have breath in my body, I will protect you, cherish you, and stand as an unbreakable shield around our family."

Liana looked into his eyes, her heart overflowing with sacred deliverance.

"Matteo," Liana whispered through joyful tears. "You looked past the lies, you tore down an empire of corruption to give me my baby back, and you built a fortress of love where my son can grow without fear. I give you my life, my heart, and my eternal soul."

The pastor smiled, raising his hands: "By the authority vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife. Matteo, kiss your bride."

Matteo leaned down, wrapping his long, powerful arms around Liana’s waist, lifting her slightly as he claimed her lips in a deep, slow, breathtaking kiss that sealed their past, their present, and their eternal future.

The entire lawn erupted into a roaring standing ovation.

Nico clapped his chubby hands, shouting happily: "Mommy and Daddy! Yay!"

Matteo scooped his son onto his hip, holding Liana tightly against his side, turning to face their cheering friends under the bright, endless sky.
