Chapter 2 - THE STOLEN BLOODLINE

Matteo did not speak a single word.
He walked swiftly out of the nursery into his private executive office across the hall, leaving the door open. He sat behind his massive obsidian desk, inserted the micro-SD card into an encrypted military-grade laptop, and tapped the terminal keys with ruthless speed.
Liana followed him into the room, holding Nico securely against her heart.
The computer screen flickered, bypassing the digital encryption protocols, and illuminated with a high-definition video file labeled: ST. JUDE CLINIC — ICU BAY 4 — OCTOBER 14 (02:14 AM).
The footage showed a private delivery room in an upscale private clinic in northern New Jersey.
On the bed lay a young woman, unconscious under heavy surgical sedation—Liana Graves. In the corner of the room, inside an open medical bassinet, lay a healthy, dark-haired newborn boy kicking his legs.
The door to the clinic room clicked open.
Stepping into the camera frame was a woman wearing sterile scrubs and a surgical mask. She lowered the mask for three seconds to check the hallway mirror.
Matteo’s gray eyes narrowed into black voids of pure, murderous rage.
The woman on the screen was Dr. Evelyn Vance—the chief of pediatric medicine for the Varric syndicate and the personal physician to Matteo’s late wife, Elena.
The video captured Dr. Vance swapping the newborn baby with a wrapped medical bundle, cutting the identification band from the child's ankle, and slipping the live infant into a heated transport carrier.
Then came the audio from the clinic's intercom:
“Dr. Vance to Dr. Nolan Price: The surrogate extraction is complete. The biological heir is secured. Administer the paralytic to the mother and sign the stillbirth death certificate. Matteo will never know the real Nico died of congenital respiratory failure at six months.”
Liana fell to her knees on the Persian rug beside the desk, burying her face into the baby’s soft neck, weeping uncontrollable, wracking sobs that shook her entire frame.
"He's alive..." Liana cried out, her tears soaking into the baby's blanket. "My baby didn't die... God in heaven, my Lucas is alive..."
Nico stirred, woke up, and reached his small hands toward Liana’s cheeks, wiping away her tears with his tiny palms, cooing softly as if he understood every drop of her grief.
Matteo stood up from behind his desk. The sheer physical presence of the six-foot-three mafia don seemed to consume all the oxygen in the room.
His real son—the child Elena had birthed nine months ago—had died of a hidden genetic heart defect three months ago while Matteo was overseeing port operations in Europe.
His corrupt sister, Sofia Varric, along with Dr. Vance and Dr. Price, had concealed the child’s death to prevent the $400 million Varric family inheritance trust from dissolving into Matteo’s direct control. They had tracked down Liana Graves—a woman whose bloodline matched Elena’s maternal haplogroup—stolen her newborn child at birth, staged a faked infant death, and installed the baby in this penthouse as a puppet heir they could control.
Matteo looked down at Liana and the child.
"He is your biological son, Liana," Matteo whispered, his voice dropping into a register of cold, terrifying finality.

He unholstered his custom black Kimber .45 from beneath his jacket, chambering a round with a sharp, echoing CLACK.
"And tonight," Matteo declared, "we execute every person who made you cry beside an empty grave."
