Chapter 23 - I BECOME A NURSE

I finished nursing school at thirty-six.
Late.
Perfect.
My first job:
Medical-surgical unit.
Not domestic-violence advocacy.
Not trauma destiny.
I liked:
Routine.
Medication math.
Old patients complaining about food.
Families asking too many questions.
Night shifts.
Real work.
A man once came in with a broken arm after falling from a ladder.
I froze for half a second.
Then did my job.
Memory without obedience.
Maya would have loved that phrase.
May you like
I told her.
She charged me for the session anyway.
