Chapter 17 - MAYA’S QUESTION

Maya asked:
“Who are you without surviving Derek?”
I hated the question.
“Waitress.”
“That is work.”
“Vincent’s sister.”
“That is relationship.”
“Sofia’s daughter.”
“Relationship.”
“Trust beneficiary.”
“Legal status.”
I stared.
“You’re irritating.”
“Profession.”
I laughed.
Then answered slowly.
“I like old movies.”
“Good.”
“I hate olives.”
“Important.”
“I’m funny.”
“Debatable.”
“I wanted to study nursing once.”
There.
I had dropped out of community college after Mom’s cancer worsened.
Then never returned.
Why?
Money.
Work.
Derek.
Life.
The trust made school possible.
I enrolled part-time.
Not because trauma destined me to healthcare.
Because I had wanted it at nineteen.
At thirty-one, I started again.
