Chapter 6 — The Enemy Inside the Family

THE FAKE HEIR SCANDAL
Chapter 6 — The Enemy Inside the Family
The Valenti family had a rule.
No matter how much blood was spilled behind closed doors, the family name came first.
That was how empires survived.
Not because everyone inside them loved each other.
But because everyone understood one thing:
A family secret was more valuable than family loyalty.
I learned that the moment I entered the private meeting room the next morning.
The room was not designed for conversations.
It was designed for decisions.
A long black table.
Leather chairs.
Security monitors covering one wall.
No photographs.
No memories.
Nothing personal.
Only power.
Adrian stood at the head of the table.
Victor Valenti sat across from him.
The man who had admitted helping Isabella.
The man who had looked Adrian in the eyes and said he was saving the family from him.
And somehow, despite everything, he looked completely calm.
That frightened me more than anger would have.
People who lost control made mistakes.
People who stayed calm were usually prepared.
“I still don’t understand why she is here.”
Victor looked at me.
His tone was polite.
Almost respectful.
But I felt the insult underneath.
“She is a housekeeper.”
The old words again.
A title meant to shrink me.
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Her name is Elena Carter.”
Victor smiled.
“And that changes what?”
“It changes the fact that she is the person who discovered the truth.”
Victor leaned back.
“Or the person who created it.”
The room became silent.
My chest tightened.
There it was.
The accusation.
The one I knew was coming.
“She has access to the house,” Victor continued. “She knows our schedules. She knows private information. She has been close enough to manipulate the situation.”
I looked at Adrian.
For one second, I wondered.
Not if he believed Victor.
But if he could afford not to.
Because people like Adrian had survived by trusting very few people.
And I was not one of them.
Not really.
I was an employee.
A stranger.
A woman who suddenly held information that could destroy his family.
Victor noticed my silence.
“See?”
He smiled.
“Even she knows how suspicious this looks.”
Before I could answer, Adrian spoke.
“No.”
Victor looked at him.
“No?”
“You’re doing exactly what I expected.”
Adrian walked slowly around the table.
“You are trying to move attention away from the evidence.”
Victor’s expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Adrian saw it.
“You helped Isabella.”
Victor said nothing.
“You arranged the fake pregnancy.”
Still nothing.
“You used my inheritance rules against me.”
The silence grew heavier.
“And now you want everyone to believe the person who exposed the lie is the problem.”
Adrian stopped.
“You taught me how to recognize manipulation.”
Victor smiled sadly.
“I taught you everything.”
A strange sadness entered his voice.
“And that is why watching you fail hurts.”
I stood near the wall, listening.
Trying to understand how a family could destroy itself so quietly.
Victor had helped raise Adrian.
He had been there after Adrian lost his parents.
He had guided him through his first business deals.
He had been called the man who protected the Valenti legacy.
But now he was the person trying to steal it.
“Why?” Adrian finally asked.
The question was softer than I expected.
Not a business question.
Not a billionaire demanding answers.
A nephew asking his uncle.
“Why would you do this?”
Victor looked at him for a long moment.
Then he sighed.
“Because your father made a mistake.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Victor stood.
“Your father believed love was more important than legacy.”
Nobody moved.
“He trusted people who didn’t deserve trust.”
The room became colder.
“And you are repeating the same mistake.”
Victor looked at me.
“With her.”
I felt the insult.
But Adrian felt something else.
A warning.
“Be careful.”
Victor smiled.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The weakness.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You think caring about someone is weakness.”
“I think caring about the wrong person is.”
That afternoon, Adrian asked me to meet him privately.
Not in the office.
Not in the library.
The garden.
The same place where Lily used to chase butterflies while I worked nearby.
“You believe him?”
I looked at Adrian.
“Your uncle?”
“Yes.”
I hesitated.
“I believe he believes he is right.”
Adrian looked surprised.
“That’s different.”
“Yes.”
I looked toward the gardens.
“People who do terrible things rarely think they’re the villain.”
A quiet moment passed.
Then Adrian asked:
“Are you afraid of him?”
I thought about it.
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“Good.”
I sighed.
“You said that before.”
“Because it’s true.”
He stepped closer.
“Fear keeps people alive.”
I looked at him.
“What about courage?”
A small pause.
“Courage keeps them from becoming what they’re fighting.”
For the first time in days, I saw something human in him.
Not the billionaire.
Not the heir.
The man.
A man who had just discovered the person he trusted most had betrayed him.
That evening, another piece of evidence arrived.
A sealed envelope.
No sender.
No address.
Only my name.
Elena Carter.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel.
Alive.
Standing outside Harbor Point.
And beside him…
Was Adrian’s father.
The date on the back made my blood run cold.
The photograph was taken two days before Daniel died.
There was a note attached.
Four words.
ASK ADRIAN WHAT HE KNOWS.
I looked up.
Adrian was standing across the room.
He saw my face.
“What happened?”
I could not speak.
I handed him the photograph.
The moment he saw it…
Everything changed.
His expression disappeared.
His hand tightened around the picture.
“Where did you get this?”
“It was sent to me.”
He stared at the image.
“My father…”
His voice broke slightly.
Something I had never heard before.
Fear.
“Your father knew Daniel?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
He walked to the window.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then:
“I thought I knew the entire story.”
I waited.
“But I don’t.”
The rain started again outside.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Like the world was preparing for something worse.
Adrian turned back.
“There is one person who might know.”
“Who?”
He looked toward the door.
“Someone who was there the night my father died.”
I swallowed.
“Who?”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“My mother’s assistant.”
The woman everyone thought was dead.
The woman who had returned.
The woman who might hold the truth behind everything.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
“What?”
Silence.
Then:
“Where?”
He ended the call.
I stood.
“What happened?”
He looked at me.
“The woman from the photograph…”
My heart raced.
“She contacted us.”
“And?”
Adrian grabbed his coat.
“She wants to meet.”
A pause.
“But she gave one condition.”
“What condition?”
His eyes met mine.
“She wants you there.”
For years, the Valenti family had hidden its secrets behind wealth, power, and reputation.
But secrets had a weakness.
They needed people to keep them buried.
And now…
Too many people knew.
The war inside the Valenti family had begun.
And I was no longer standing outside it.
May you like
I was standing at the center.
