Chapter 13 — The Rescue

THE FAKE HEIR SCANDAL
Chapter 13 — The Rescue
The first sound I heard was not the door opening.
It was the silence.
That was what woke me.
A mother learns the difference between ordinary silence and dangerous silence.
Ordinary silence meant a child was sleeping.
Dangerous silence meant someone was trying not to be heard.
I opened my eyes.
The room was dark.
For a few seconds, I didn’t know where I was.
Then I remembered.
The estate.
The investigation.
The messages.
The photograph.
My body reacted before my mind did.
I turned toward Lily.
Her bed was empty.
My heart stopped.
“Lily?”
No answer.
I was out of bed before I even realized I had moved.
The room was cold.
Too cold.
The window was slightly open.
Rain moved across the glass.
And on the floor beside the bed…
Was Lily’s stuffed rabbit.
I picked it up.
My hands started shaking.
“No.”
The word came out as a whisper.
Then louder.
“No!”
The entire estate woke up within minutes.
Security flooded the hallway.
Employees gathered behind doors.
Questions.
Panic.
Fear.
But I heard only one thing.
My daughter was gone.
My little girl.
The person I had spent my entire life protecting.
Gone.
Adrian arrived less than three minutes later.
I had never seen him move like that.
Not the controlled businessman.
Not the calm billionaire.
Just a man running toward someone he loved.
“Where is she?”
His voice was terrifying.
Not because it was loud.
Because it wasn’t.
I looked at him.
And for the first time since knowing Adrian Moretti…
I saw fear.
Real fear.
“She was taken.”
The words broke something in him.
“Who?”
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
Adrian turned to security.
“Lock down every exit.”
“It’s already done.”
“Check every camera.”
Marcus moved immediately.
“We’re reviewing footage.”
Adrian looked at me.
“Elena.”
I could barely breathe.
“I should have protected her.”
His expression changed.
“No.”
“But—”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“This is not your fault.”
I wanted to believe him.
But mothers always blame themselves.
Because no matter how much we fight…
There is always a small voice asking:
What if I had done something different?
What if I had stayed awake?
What if I had noticed?
The security footage revealed something impossible.
There was no forced entry.
No broken locks.
No alarms.
No strangers.
Whoever took Lily had walked into the estate like they belonged there.
Marcus stopped the footage.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”
He replayed the recording.
A figure appeared in the hallway.
A person wearing a security uniform.
My stomach tightened.
“Who is that?”
Marcus zoomed in.
Then his face changed.
“No.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Who?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Adrian’s voice became colder.
“Who?”
Marcus whispered:
“Someone who shouldn’t be here.”
The image sharpened.
And I saw her.
The woman from the photograph.
The woman who was supposed to be dead.
Claire Morgan.
Adrian immediately grabbed his phone.
“No.”
Marcus looked at him.
“What?”
“She wouldn’t take Lily.”
“How do you know?”
Because I knew something Adrian didn’t.
I stepped forward.
“She knows Lily.”
Everyone looked at me.
I swallowed.
“Claire has been protecting secrets for years. She helped us. She brought us evidence.”
Adrian stared at the screen.
“Then why take her?”
A horrible thought entered my mind.
And I hated it.
Because it made sense.
“She isn’t taking Lily.”
Adrian looked at me.
“She’s protecting her.”
Silence.
Everyone stared.
“What?”
I looked at the footage.
“Whoever sent that photograph was watching us.”
My voice shook.
“They know Lily is the one thing that can break me.”
I looked at Adrian.
“And you.”
His expression hardened.
“They are trying to force us to react.”
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Where is my daughter?”
The voice on the other end was calm.
Too calm.
“Your daughter?”
A pause.
“No.”
The voice changed slightly.
“She is Elena’s daughter.”
My blood turned cold.
Adrian’s face darkened.
“Who are you?”
A quiet laugh.
“You really don’t know?”
Silence.
Then:
“I thought your mother would have prepared you better.”
Adrian gripped the phone.
“Where is Lily?”
The person ignored him.
“The truth has always belonged to those willing to pay for it.”
A pause.
“And now you will pay.”
The call ended.
Twenty minutes later, another message arrived.
A location.
An abandoned church outside the city.
The same church where Adrian’s father had been killed years ago.
A coincidence?
No.
Nothing was a coincidence anymore.
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“I’m going.”
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“Sir, it’s a trap.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Adrian looked at me.
Because the answer was obvious.
“Because my daughter is there.”
I froze.
“My daughter?”
He looked at Lily’s empty bed.
Then back at me.
“She may not have my blood.”
His voice softened.
“But she has been part of my life since the day she handed me that cookie.”
A pause.
“I’m not leaving her.”
I expected Adrian to tell me to stay behind.
To keep me safe.
Instead, he said:
“You’re coming with me.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“Sir—”
“She’s Lily’s mother.”
Adrian looked at me.
“And she’s the reason this started.”
I understood.
They didn’t want money.
They didn’t want the company.
They wanted silence.
And I was the one person who refused to give it.
The old church stood at the edge of the city.
Abandoned.
Broken.
A place where forgotten things went to disappear.
The same kind of place powerful people used when they wanted secrets buried.
Adrian walked ahead.
Marcus stayed close.
I held my breath.
Then we heard it.
A child laughing.
My heart shattered.
“Lily.”
I ran.
But Adrian stopped me.
“Wait.”
Because standing near the altar was someone else.
A woman.
Holding my daughter’s hand.
Claire Morgan.
And beside her…
Was a man.
A man I had never seen before.
But Adrian recognized him immediately.
His face went completely white.
“No.”
The man smiled.
“Hello, brother.”
The world stopped.
Brother.
The word echoed.
Adrian stared.
Unable to move.
Claire looked at him with sadness.
“I tried to stop this.”
Adrian’s voice was barely audible.
“Who is he?”
The man stepped forward.
“My name is Gabriel.”
A pause.
“Gabriel Moretti.”
My breathing stopped.
The missing brother.
The secret heir.
The person everyone thought was dead.
The final piece of the puzzle.
Adrian looked at Claire.
“You knew.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because if Victor found out Gabriel was alive…”
She looked at Lily.
“He would have killed everyone connected to him.”
Gabriel smiled coldly.
“And now Victor is finally exposed.”
Adrian stared.
“Why take Lily?”
Gabriel looked at me.
“I didn’t.”
Claire answered.
“I did.”
Everyone turned.
She lowered her eyes.
“I needed Adrian to come here.”
My heart sank.
“Why?”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“Because there is one truth left.”
A pause.
“The truth about who really killed Daniel Carter.”
Before anyone could speak…
The church doors slammed open.
Everyone turned.
Victor Moretti stood there.
And he was smiling.
Because he was not surprised.
He was not angry.
He was waiting.
“I wondered how long it would take you to find this place.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You.”
Victor looked around.
“At last.”
His eyes moved to Gabriel.
“The lost son returns.”
Then to Lily.
“The innocent child becomes the final witness.”
Then to me.
“And the maid who started a war finally learns why.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why what?”
Victor smiled.
“Why Daniel Carter chose you.”
And that was when I understood.
Daniel had not just discovered a secret.
He had hidden one.
A secret connected to me.
To Lily.
To Adrian.
To the entire Moretti family.
May you like
And Victor had spent three years trying to make sure nobody ever found out.
