Chapter 3 — The Woman Behind the Lie

THE FAKE HEIR SCANDAL

Chapter 3 — The Woman Behind the Lie

The words “Except family” changed the atmosphere inside the room.

A few minutes earlier, everyone had been waiting to see a scandal.

Now they were waiting to see a war.

The guests downstairs still believed they had witnessed the collapse of Isabella Laurent’s perfect announcement.

They were wrong.

The fake pregnancy was only the surface.

The real betrayal was buried deeper.

Because Isabella had not just lied about a baby.

She had built a lie that required planning, money, access, and someone powerful enough to protect her.

Someone who knew the Valenti family from the inside.

Adrian stood near the window, the contract still in his hand.

Outside, rain poured over the estate gardens, turning the world beyond the glass into a blur of gray shadows.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

I had learned something about Adrian during my years working in his home.

Anger was easy to recognize.

A raised voice.

A slammed door.

A threat.

Those things were simple.

But Adrian’s silence was different.

His silence meant he was organizing every piece of information in his mind.

And when he finally spoke…

People usually regretted giving him a reason to speak.

“Explain the contract.”

Isabella sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked smaller.

Not innocent.

Not harmless.

Just smaller.

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.”

Adrian’s expression did not change.

“That is not an explanation.”

She looked at him.

“You think I wanted to fake a pregnancy?”

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

“Yes,” Adrian said.

The single word destroyed whatever performance she had prepared.

Isabella looked away.

“I wanted a future.”

“You wanted my name.”

Her eyes flashed.

“That is unfair.”

“Is it?”

Adrian placed the contract on the table.

“You purchased a fake pregnancy device before we were even engaged.”

Silence.

“You created medical documents.”

Silence.

“You convinced hundreds of people tonight that I was going to become a father.”

His voice lowered.

“And you call that wanting a future?”

Isabella’s face hardened.

The tears disappeared.

The softness disappeared.

And suddenly, I saw another version of her.

The woman beneath the perfect dress.

“You think you are different from everyone else, Adrian.”

The room froze.

“What does that mean?”

“It means everyone wants something from you.”

She stood.

“You think people love you because you’re Adrian Valenti? Because you’re powerful? Because your name opens doors?”

Her laugh was bitter.

“They love what comes with you.”

Adrian stared at her.

“And you?”

For a moment, Isabella said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“I loved you.”

Something in her voice almost sounded real.

Almost.

“But love wasn’t enough.”

The officer handed Adrian a copy of the contract.

I watched his eyes move across the pages.

His expression changed slightly.

“What?”

The officer hesitated.

“There is a payment record attached.”

“To whom?”

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“An account registered under a private consulting company.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Name.”

The officer gave him the paper.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not in Isabella.

In Adrian.

The company name meant something to him.

“Who is it?” I asked before I could stop myself.

Everyone looked at me.

I immediately regretted speaking.

But Adrian did not correct me.

He only stared at the document.

“Blackridge Advisory.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant everything to him.

“Is that bad?” I whispered.

Adrian did not answer.

Isabella did.

“It belongs to your uncle.”

The room became completely still.

Victor Valenti.

Adrian’s uncle.

The man who had helped raise him after his parents died.

The man who appeared beside him at every major business event.

The man newspapers called the “quiet architect” behind the Valenti empire.

The man Adrian trusted.

“No,” Adrian said.

It was the first emotional word he had spoken all night.

Isabella looked at him.

“You know it’s true.”

“No.”

“You just don’t want it to be.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“Why?”

The question was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Why would someone inside his family do this?

Why create a fake heir?

Why risk destroying everything?

Isabella looked at the floor.

“Because the Valenti inheritance rules are clear.”

My attention sharpened.

“What rules?”

Adrian looked at me.

Then away.

“The company shares controlled by my father’s trust.”

He paused.

“If I have a biological heir, those shares remain under my direct family line.”

“And if you don’t?”

His jaw tightened.

“Control becomes divided among other family members.”

The room went cold.

A fake baby was not about love.

It was about power.

Billions.

Ownership.

Control.

Isabella had not been trying to become a mother.

She had been trying to become untouchable.

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone turned.

One of Adrian’s security officers answered.

“Yes?”

His expression changed.

“Sir…”

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

The officer lowered the phone.

“There has been a problem downstairs.”

“What kind of problem?”

“The guests.”

Adrian waited.

“They’re not leaving.”

A strange silence followed.

“Why?”

The officer hesitated.

“Because someone told them not to.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“Your uncle.”

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Adrian walked toward the door.

“Stay here.”

The officer followed.

I stepped back.

This was no longer my world.

This was billionaire politics.

Family wars.

Power struggles.

People like me were supposed to disappear when things became complicated.

But before Adrian left, he stopped.

He looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Are you afraid?”

The question surprised me.

I nodded honestly.

“Yes.”

He looked toward the hallway.

“Good.”

I frowned.

“Good?”

“Fear means you understand the danger.”

His eyes returned to mine.

“But courage means you speak anyway.”

For a second, I forgot who he was.

Not the billionaire.

Not the powerful man.

Just Adrian.

A person who had discovered the people closest to him were willing to destroy him.

Then he looked at Lily.

“Take care of her.”

My daughter nodded seriously.

“I will.”

A tiny smile appeared on his face.

Then it vanished.

Because the businessman returned.

Adrian Valenti walked downstairs to face the man who had helped raise him.

The man who might have tried to steal his future.

Ten minutes later, the ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Victor Valenti stood in the center of the room.

Silver-haired.

Elegant.

Calm.

The kind of man people trusted immediately.

He smiled when he saw Adrian.

“My nephew.”

Nobody spoke.

Victor looked around.

“At last, the family is together.”

Adrian stopped several feet away.

“Did you help Isabella?”

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Victor sighed.

“As dramatic as always.”

“That was not my question.”

Victor looked at him.

Then smiled.

A small, disappointed smile.

“You always were too emotional when it came to family.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Answer me.”

Victor adjusted his jacket.

“Very well.”

He looked around the room.

Then back at Adrian.

“Yes.”

The entire ballroom gasped.

Victor continued:

“I helped her.”

Adrian did not move.

“Why?”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“Because someone needed to save this family from you.”

The words struck harder than any weapon.

Adrian stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Victor stepped closer.

“It means you have spent years pretending you are protecting the Valenti name.”

His voice lowered.

“But you forgot one thing.”

“What?”

Victor looked directly at him.

“You were never supposed to inherit it.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

And in that moment, everyone realized something.

The fake pregnancy was never the beginning of the war.

May you like

It was only the first move.
