Chapter 5 — Daniel’s Hidden Secret

THE FAKE HEIR SCANDAL

Chapter 5 — Daniel’s Hidden Secret

The first thing I did after reading the note was call Daniel.

Not because he could answer.

Not because I believed, even for one impossible second, that my dead husband would pick up the phone.

I called because there were moments when the world became too heavy, and the only person I wanted was the one person who was no longer there.

The call went straight to voicemail.

Of course it did.

I sat in the dark beside Lily’s bed, holding the phone against my ear while his old recorded greeting played.

“Hey, it’s Daniel. I’m probably working, so leave a message.”

A simple sentence.

A normal sentence.

A sentence from a life that no longer existed.

Three years ago, I had received a phone call that changed everything.

A construction accident.

That was what they called it.

An accident.

A word people used when they wanted the story to end.

Daniel had fallen from the upper floor of a waterfront building project.

The investigation lasted less than two weeks.

The company paid a settlement.

The newspapers moved on.

Everyone told me to be grateful.

At the time, I had a newborn daughter and no energy left to fight.

But Daniel had never believed in giving up.

That was the thing about him.

He saw injustice like other people saw smoke.

He noticed it before anyone else.

And now, three years later, I wondered if he had died because he noticed something someone wanted hidden.

The next morning, Adrian asked me to meet him in the private library.

The room smelled like old books and expensive wood.

It was one of my favorite rooms in the entire mansion.

Not because of the luxury.

Because it was the only place where Adrian looked human.

Away from meetings.

Away from cameras.

Away from expectations.

He stood near the fireplace.

“You received a threat.”

It was not a question.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell security immediately?”

I looked down.

“Because I didn’t want to cause more problems.”

His expression changed.

“That is exactly what they want.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“They want you to believe your safety is a burden.”

The words surprised me.

Because they were true.

I had spent years believing that.

Every time I needed help.

Every time I needed time off.

Every time something went wrong.

I worried about becoming someone’s problem.

Adrian walked to his desk.

“I had someone investigate Daniel’s case.”

My entire body went still.

“What?”

He placed a folder on the desk.

“I started last night.”

I didn’t touch it.

“Why?”

“Because the person who planted those documents knows your past.”

He paused.

“And whoever is behind this knew Daniel.”

My fingers slowly opened the folder.

Inside were reports.

Old newspaper articles.

Police records.

Company documents.

The first page made my heart stop.

DECEASED: DANIEL CARTER
PROJECT: HARBOR POINT DEVELOPMENT

I knew that name.

The waterfront project.

The one where Daniel died.

I turned the page.

A photograph fell out.

Daniel.

Standing beside another man.

A man I recognized.

My blood turned cold.

“Who is that?”

Adrian looked at the picture.

“That’s Victor Valenti.”

I stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel never mentioned him.”

Adrian was quiet.

“That may be the reason he died.”

I read the documents slowly.

Every page made the world feel less stable.

Daniel had not been just a construction worker.

Before working at Harbor Point, he had been part of a safety inspection team.

He discovered missing reports.

Fake materials.

Illegal shortcuts.

The project was dangerous.

And someone was covering it up.

The company responsible?

A subsidiary owned by Valenti Holdings.

My hands started shaking.

“Daniel knew.”

Adrian nodded.

“He was collecting evidence.”

“Against your family?”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

Because he could have lied.

He could have protected the Valenti name.

Instead, he told me the truth.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Adrian looked away.

“Because someone made sure the investigation disappeared.”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

We both thought the same name.

Victor.

That afternoon, I found something I had forgotten.

A box.

Hidden in the back of my closet.

Daniel’s belongings.

I had avoided opening it for three years.

Some wounds stayed closed because reopening them felt impossible.

But now…

I needed answers.

Inside were old clothes.

A watch.

A few photographs.

And a small black notebook.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized it.

Daniel carried that notebook everywhere.

I opened it.

Most pages were filled with numbers.

Dates.

Names.

Locations.

Then I found the final page.

The last thing he had written.

If anything happens to me, do not trust the official story.

My hands trembled.

Below it was another sentence.

The Valenti family is not protecting the empire. They are protecting the person destroying it.

I stopped breathing.

A noise came from behind me.

I turned.

Adrian stood at the doorway.

He had seen my face.

“What did you find?”

I handed him the notebook.

He read the final sentence.

And for the first time since I had met him…

Adrian Valenti looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not controlled.

Afraid.

That night, Adrian called a private meeting.

Only three people were allowed inside.

Adrian.

Me.

And his head of security, Marcus Hale.

The notebook sat on the table between us.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Sir, are you certain this is real?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“Then we have a bigger problem.”

“What?”

Marcus opened a file.

“We checked the security footage from the night the documents were planted in Ms. Carter’s locker.”

“And?”

“The person who entered the staff area…”

He stopped.

Adrian’s voice sharpened.

“Who?”

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Adrian.

“It was someone with full access to the estate.”

Silence.

“Who?”

Marcus answered.

“Your mother’s former assistant.”

I frowned.

“Your mother?”

Adrian froze.

Because his mother had been dead for fifteen years.

“That’s impossible.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

He placed another photograph on the table.

A woman.

Older.

Familiar.

Someone I had seen before.

Adrian picked it up.

His face changed.

Because he knew her.

And when he spoke, his voice was barely a whisper.

“She was supposed to be dead.”

The room went silent.

The fake pregnancy.

The stolen documents.

Daniel’s investigation.

Victor’s involvement.

None of it was random.

They were connected.

And now another impossible truth had appeared.

Someone from Adrian’s past had returned.

Someone who should not exist.

Someone who knew secrets the Valenti family had buried for years.

Adrian looked at me.

“From this moment forward…”

He paused.

“You are no longer just a witness.”

I waited.

“You are part of this fight.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.

And somewhere in the city…

Someone who believed the past was buried forever realized one thing.

Daniel Carter’s evidence had survived.

May you like

And it was coming back to destroy them.
