Chapter 8 - The Library Offer

Marcus hesitated, his jaw working as he tried to read the room. "Sir, with all due respect, domestic staff aren't permitted in the executive library without security supervision—"

"Mr. Trent," Arthur interrupted, his voice dropping into a tone that carried the weight of a multi-billion-dollar legal department. "I did not ask for your procedural opinion. I ordered you to vacate the room. If the doors are not closed in five seconds, I will call Mr. Sterling directly and discuss your immediate suspension. Are we clear?"

Marcus swallowed hard, his face turning mottled red. "Yes, sir." He glared at Elena with a promise of future violence before backing out and pulling the heavy mahogany doors shut with a definitive click.

Elena stood alone in the center of the vast library, surrounded by thousands of leather-bound books and towering arched windows overlooking the ocean. She rubbed her bruised arm where Marcus had gripped her, her breathing shallow.

"Please sit down, Miss Rostova," Arthur said kindly, gesturing toward a plush velvet armchair opposite the desk.

"I prefer to stand, sir," Elena replied, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to remain professional. "If I am being terminated for the wine discrepancy, I would like to state for the record that Mr. Trent—"

"You aren't being terminated, Elena," Arthur smiled gently, standing up and walking around the desk to hand her a glass of iced water from a crystal pitcher. "In fact, I am here to offer you a profound apology on behalf of Sterling Capital Partners for the deplorable treatment you have endured under our employment."

Elena blinked, entirely stunned. She took the glass of water mechanically, her hands shaking so much the ice clinked against the crystal. "An apology? I don't understand."

"A few days ago," Arthur explained, leaning against the edge of the desk, "an associate of ours—a man named John—visited this estate undercover. He observed the operational dynamics of the staff, and more importantly, he observed your extraordinary integrity and kindness under extreme duress."

Elena’s eyes widened. "John? The man from the gate? The one in the wine cellar?"

"The very same," Arthur nodded. "John has the ear of Mr. Julian Sterling himself. He reported that while the rest of the domestic management was engaging in corruption and abuse, you risked your own livelihood to feed a starving stranger, and refused to participate in the theft of estate property."

Arthur walked back to his briefcase, pulling out a thick, legal-bound document and a sleek, silver envelope. He laid them on the desk in front of her.

"This Saturday night, Mr. Sterling is hosting a major charity gala in the main ballroom," Arthur said. "He has explicitly requested your presence—not as a member of the serving staff, but as an honored guest of the executive suite."

"Me? At the gala?" Elena shook her head emphatically, backing away a step. "No, sir. Absolutely not. Mrs. Gable would make my life a living hell if I walked into that ballroom in a gown while the rest of the staff is serving. And besides... I don't belong in a room full of billionaires. I’m a maid."

"You are a Boston University finance graduate who sacrificed her ambition for her family," Arthur corrected her gently, his tone filled with genuine respect. "Mr. Sterling knows your full history, Elena. And he wants to offer you a position at our Manhattan headquarters as a junior portfolio analyst, starting at three times your current salary, with full medical coverage that will completely subsidize your mother’s care facility in Providence."

May you like

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to spin around her. "Three... three times my salary? My mother's care... fully covered?"

"On one condition," Arthur said, tapping the silver envelope. "You attend the gala this Saturday night. You wear the custom gown Mr. Sterling has had delivered to your private quarters. And you stand by his side when he addresses the ballroom at midnight."
