Chapter 19 - The New Foundation

Later that evening, after a quiet, intimate dinner served by the roaring fire in the executive library, Julian stood by the antique writing desk, holding two crystal glasses of a special vintage wine he had retrieved from the cellar himself.

He handed one glass to Elena, who was sitting comfortably on the plush velvet sofa, her heels kicked off, tucking her legs beneath her cashmere skirt.

"I have one final piece of corporate business we need to execute before the year ends," Julian said, taking a sip of his wine as he looked down at her. "Arthur and I finalized the legal paperwork in Manhattan on Friday."

Elena raised an eyebrow, taking a sip from her glass. "Don't tell me we're acquiring another maritime port in Asia before New Year's Eve, Julian. I left my analytical modeling tablet in New York."

"No acquisitions," Julian smiled, setting his wine glass down on the mantelpiece. He walked over to the desk, picking up a heavy, leather-bound portfolio with gold embossing across the cover. He carried it over and laid it onto Elena’s lap. "We are establishing a new foundation."

Elena opened the leather cover, scanning the legal charter printed on the first page. Her eyes widened as she read the title:

The Rostova-Sterling Foundation for Domestic Workers and Memory Care Research.

"Julian..." she breathed, reading through the initial endowment figures. "Fifty million dollars? You're funding a fifty-million-dollar charitable trust?"

"We are funding it," Julian corrected her gently, kneeling on the Persian rug beside the sofa so he was at eye level with her. "You are named as the permanent, independent Chairwoman and Chief Executive Director of the foundation. Its sole mission is to provide legal defense, educational scholarships, and wage protection for domestic labor across New England, while simultaneously funding clinical grants for Alzheimer's and neurological research at Johns Hopkins."

Tears spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, tracking silently down her cheeks. She looked from the charter to the man kneeling before her—the billionaire who had once believed that empathy made people weak, now utilizing his vast empire to protect the most vulnerable workers in society in her honor.

"I don't know what to say," she whispered, her voice husky with emotion. "This will change thousands of lives, Julian. It will save families like mine."

"It’s the only investment I've ever made where the return is priceless," Julian said softly.

He reached into the pocket of his wool coat, pulling out a small, dark velvet box. He held it in his palm, looking up into her turquoise eyes with a look of absolute, foundational certainty and endless love.

"When I came to this estate three months ago," Julian said, his voice deep and steady, "I was an empty man living in an empty castle. You gave me bread when I was hungry. You gave me courage when my family betrayed me. And you gave me a heart when I had forgotten how to feel."

He opened the velvet box. Nestled inside the dark satin was a breathtaking, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring set on a delicate, vintage platinum band—a ring that whispered of timeless elegance, respect, and enduring strength.

"I don't want you just as my analyst, Elena," Julian whispered, taking her trembling left hand into his own. "I don't want you just as my partner in the firm. I want you as my wife. I want to build every tomorrow I have left on this earth with you by my side. Will you marry me?"

Elena didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.

She dropped the legal portfolio onto the sofa, threw her arms around his neck, and pulled him forward onto the rug with her, burying her face against his neck as she kissed him with all the fierce, passionate love her heart could hold.

"Yes," she sobbed happily against his lips, laughing through her tears as he wrapped his strong arms around her waist, lifting her off the floor. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"
