Chapter 10 - The Gala Begins

At 9:00 PM, the towering brass gates of Sterling Manor opened to admit a glittering stream of limousines, Maybachs, and classic Rolls-Royces.

The estate had been transformed into a palace of modern luxury. The limestone drive was illuminated by flaming torches; the formal rose gardens were bathed in soft fairy lights; and the grand ballroom echoed with the sophisticated melodies of a live twenty-piece chamber orchestra flown in from Boston.

Inside the ballroom, the regional elite of New England and Wall Street mingled under crystal chandeliers, sipping vintage champagne and discussing maritime mergers, real estate acquisitions, and political campaigns.

Near the main entrance, Mrs. Gable stood in her formal housekeeper’s attire, directing the serving staff with militaristic precision, while Marcus Trent patrolled the perimeter with four of his uniformed guards, his eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of Elena.

"Have you seen her?" Mrs. Gable hissed, stepping close to Marcus as a tray of caviar canapés passed by.

"No," Marcus muttered, adjusting his earpiece, his jaw clenched in frustration. "My men checked the basement quarters ten minutes ago. She’s gone. She probably took the warning and ran out the back gates with her tail between her legs."

"Good," Mrs. Gable sneered, taking a sip of champagne from a discarded glass on a service tray. "One less problem to deal with before the audit."

Suddenly, the chamber orchestra ceased playing mid-measure.

A heavy, expectant silence rippled through the massive ballroom as the great double doors at the top of the grand marble staircase were pulled open by two uniformed footmen.

Arthur Pendelton stepped out onto the landing, approaching the brass microphone stand positioned at the center of the balcony overlooking the crowd.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed members of the board, and friends of Sterling Capital," Arthur’s voice rang out, warm and resonant over the state-of-the-art sound system. "Thank you for joining us tonight at Sterling Manor. It is my absolute honor to introduce our host for the evening—the founder and CEO of Sterling Capital Partners, Mr. Julian Sterling."

The crowd erupted into polite, sophisticated applause as Julian stepped out from the shadows of the executive suite onto the top of the marble staircase.

He looked magnificent. He wore a bespoke, midnight-black tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding height. His dark hair was swept back, his sharp features illuminated by the chandelier light, radiating an aura of absolute, unassailable power and authority.

But he didn't walk down the stairs alone.

He turned toward the open doorway of the suite, extending his hand with deep, formal respect.

A woman stepped out onto the marble landing, placing her gloved hand securely into his.

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom.

It was Elena.

She wore the midnight-blue Parisian silk gown, the fabric cascading around her athletic frame like liquid starlight. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, sweeping updo that revealed the glittering diamond pendant resting against her collarbone. Her turquoise eyes were bright, clear, and utterly fearless as she looked out over the sea of wealthy socialites and billionaires.

At the bottom of the staircase, near the service doors, Marcus Trent’s jaw dropped. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him a sickly, chalky gray.

Beside him, Mrs. Gable dropped her clipboard onto the marble floor with a sharp, clattering crack, her hands flying to her mouth in absolute, paralyzed horror.

"That's... that's the maid," Mrs. Gable choked out, her knees visibly trembling. "Why is Mr. Sterling holding her hand?!"
