Chapter 11 - The Descent

Julian didn't look at the board members, nor did he acknowledge the local politicians raising their glasses in salute. His dark, analytical eyes swept systematically across the ballroom floor until they locked directly onto the pale, sweating faces of Marcus Trent and Mrs. Gable standing near the service corridor.
With deliberate, measured grace, Julian began his descent down the grand marble staircase, keeping Elena’s hand firmly anchored in his.
Elena kept her chin elevated, her posture radiating the refined dignity of a queen entering her court. As they walked down the steps together, she felt the warmth of Julian’s palm against hers—a strong, protective grip that silently communicated absolute safety.
"You look breathtaking, Elena," Julian murmured under his breath, his lips barely moving as they reached the halfway landing. "How are you holding up?"
"I feel like Cinderella," she whispered back, a slight, genuine smile touching the corners of her lips. "Except I know that when the clock strikes midnight, the pumpkins are going to end up in handcuffs."
Julian chuckled—a low, rich sound that genuinely startled several nearby vice presidents who had never heard their ruthless CEO laugh in a public setting. "Not midnight. Five minutes from now."
They reached the ballroom floor, where the crowd immediately parted to form a respectful circle around them. Arthur Pendelton joined them at the bottom of the stairs, flanked by two men in dark, conservative business suits who did not look like gala guests; they carried themselves with the sharp, alert discipline of federal law enforcement officers.
Julian raised his left hand, signaling to the orchestra conductor. The music remained silent. The ambient chatter in the room quickly died down as the guests sensed the sudden, electrifying shift in the atmosphere.
"Good evening, everyone," Julian said, his powerful baritone projecting effortlessly across the silent room without the aid of a microphone. "I trust the champagne is to your liking. Before we open the ballroom floor for dancing, there is a minor piece of internal corporate housekeeping that requires my immediate attention tonight."
He turned slowly on his heel, his dark gaze cutting through the crowd like a laser until it fixed upon Marcus Trent, who was desperately trying to back away toward the kitchen service exit.
"Mr. Trent," Julian called out, his voice echoing off the high marble walls with freezing, lethal authority. "Please, don't leave just yet. Step forward into the center of the room. You too, Mrs. Gable. I want all of my guests to see the people who run Sterling Manor."
The crowd parted around the security guard and the housekeeper, leaving them isolated in a wide, empty circle of polished marble, entirely exposed under the bright crystal chandeliers.

"Mr. Sterling... sir," Marcus stammered, raising his gloved hands in a placating gesture as he took a hesitant step forward, sweat pouring down his forehead. "We were just... ensuring the catering perimeter was secure for your guests—"
"Silence," Julian commanded. A single word, spoken with such crushing, dominant force that Marcus instantly clamped his mouth shut, his entire body going rigid with terror.
