Chapter 6 - The Awakening

At Mount Sinai Hospital’s private VIP wing, the afternoon sun filled a spacious, quiet room overlooking Central Park.
Arthur Howard sat up in his hospital bed. His face was thin, his physical strength still recovering from months of chemical paralysis, but his dark eyes were sharp, clear, and full of emotion.
The door opened softly, and Elena stepped inside, holding a small bouquet of fresh white lilies.
Arthur’s face brightened instantly. "Elena..." his voice was scratchy, but warm and full of deep affection.
Elena set the flowers on the nightstand, leaning down to kiss his cheek gently. "How are you feeling today, Arthur?"
Arthur reached out, wrapping his hand over hers, his eyes drifting down to her baby bump. "Dr. Chen says the baby is perfectly healthy. He told me what you did, Elena... the brace, the cameras, the fall on the stairs."
Arthur’s eyes filled with tears, his grip on her hand tightening. "You risked everything to save my life and protect our child while I was trapped in my own body."
"I promised you at the altar, Arthur," Elena whispered, sitting on the edge of the bed and resting her cheek against his hand. "In sickness and in health. I knew what Vanessa was trying to do, and I wasn't going to let her steal our future."
The door creaked open again. Mrs. Howard stepped into the room, holding a small knitted blanket.
The older woman looked frail, her eyes swollen from days of crying. She stood near the doorway, hesitant, overcome with profound guilt.
"Arthur..." Mrs. Howard whimpered softly.
Arthur looked at his mother. He didn't yell. He didn't show anger. "Come here, Mom."
Mrs. Howard walked over, dropping to her knees beside Elena, taking Elena’s other hand in hers, tears streaming down her face.

"Elena... please forgive me," Mrs. Howard wept. "I was so blind. I let that evil woman poison my mind against you. You saved my son when I was too foolish to see the truth."
Elena looked down at her mother-in-law, her heart softening. "You were grieving, Mrs. Howard. Vanessa manipulated your pain. What matters now is that our family is safe."
