Chapter 5 - The Unraveling Empire

News of Vanessa Howard’s arrest hit the Wall Street Journal and Manhattan local news like a megaton bomb.

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the headquarters of Howard Global Logistics was swarming with federal auditors, police investigators, and news vans.

In the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor, Elena sat at the head of the massive mahogany table. She wore a tailored navy maternity suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional ponytail. Beside her sat Detective Ruiz and Catherine Vance—Manhattan’s premier corporate litigation attorney.

Across the table sat six senior board members, all of them pale, sweating, and shuffling nervously through their files.

"Gentlemen," Catherine Vance spoke, her sharp voice cutting through the tense silence. "For the last six months, five of you signed off on Vanessa Howard’s unauthorized asset transfers, believing she held the legal power of attorney over Arthur Howard’s estate."

"We... we were misled, Mrs. Vance!" the chief financial officer stammered, pulling at his collar. "Vanessa presented certified court documents signed by Judge Harrison!"

"Judge Harrison was arrested at his Greenwich estate at 6:00 AM today for bribery," Detective Ruiz noted casually, tapping his pen against his notebook.

Elena leaned forward, resting her hands on the table. Her presence was commanding, her authority absolute.

"You gentlemen have a simple choice today," Elena said smoothly. "Option one: you cooperate fully with the federal audit, surrender all communication logs with Vanessa, and resign from the board without severance."

The CFO swallowed hard. "And option two?"

Elena offered a cold, beautiful smile. "Option two: my legal team files a RICO conspiracy lawsuit against each of you individually by 1:00 PM today. You will lose your assets, your reputations, and quite likely your freedom."

Within ten minutes, all six board members signed their voluntary resignations.
