Chapter 4 - The Poison Trail

Mrs. Howard let out a horrified shriek, clutching the banister. "Poisoning?! What are you saying, Detective?! Arthur had a heart attack!"
"He didn't have a heart attack, Mrs. Howard," Elena said gently, turning to her mother-in-law. "Arthur was being administered low-dose digitalis toxicity through his daily vitamin drips—drips that were supplied exclusively by Vanessa’s private pharmacy contact."
"That's a lie!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking into hysteria as two officers stepped up behind her, grabbing her arms. "She’s framing me! She forged those records!"
"We didn't just rely on the financial records, Vanessa," Ruiz said, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Vanessa’s wrists. "An hour ago, federal agents raided the Bio-Health Laboratory in Queens. Your contact, Dr. Steven Vance, is currently in custody. He gave us the original ledgers, the wire transfer receipts, and the audio recordings of you paying him two million dollars to accelerate Arthur’s organ failure."
Mrs. Howard collapsed onto a velvet armchair in the foyer, sobbing uncontrollably as the terrifying truth washed over her. The woman she had trusted, the niece she had protected, had been systematically murdering her son right under her nose.
Vanessa struggled against the officers, her silk dress rumpled, her hair falling wild around her face. "You think you won, Elena?! You think Arthur’s going to wake up and love you?! He’s a vegetable! You’ll be left with nothing!"
Elena stepped closer to Vanessa, her hazel eyes burning with quiet, unyielding power.
"Arthur isn't a vegetable, Vanessa," Elena whispered close to her ear. "Three days ago, Dr. Vance’s toxic drip was replaced with a neutralizing agent by independent specialists. Arthur woke up this morning."

Vanessa froze, her eyes wide with total, unadulterated horror.
"And his first statement to the FBI," Elena added, "was authorizing your complete removal from the Howard estate."
