Chapter 6: The Unwanted Visitor

The smell of maple syrup and scorched batter was still lingering in the kitchen when the sharp, authoritative chime of the front doorbell rang through the house. Julian froze, a spatula hovering over the stove where he was flipping the final batch of pancakes. Chloe, who had been sitting at the counter enthusiastically counting her chocolate chips, immediately went quiet, her spoon halting mid-air.

"Stay here, sweetie," Julian instructed quietly, setting the spatula down and wiping his hands on a kitchen towel.

He walked down the sunlit hallway, his footsteps measured and deliberate. Through the frosted glass panel of the front door, the unmistakable silhouette of a tall, elegantly tailored woman stood on the porch. Julian pulled the door open just enough to block the entrance, his expression hardening immediately.

Eleanor stood on the threshold, flanked not by the wedding party this time, but by a sharply dressed corporate attorney holding a leather briefcase. Eleanor’s hair was pulled back into a severe, flawless chignon, and her sunglasses hid her eyes, though the rigid line of her jaw betrayed her simmering tension.

"Julian," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into that smooth, practiced cadence that used to charm him. She made a move to push past the door. "We need to talk. You can't just throw a tantrum and cancel a society wedding in front of two hundred guests without consequences."

"Don't even think about stepping foot in my house," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. He planted his shoulder firmly against the doorframe, blocking her path completely.

The attorney stepped forward, pushing his glasses up his nose with an air of practiced arrogance. "Mr. Vance, I am Arthur Pendelton, legal counsel for Ms. Sinclair. We are here to discuss the immediate return of engagement gifts, financial settlements regarding the canceled venue contracts, and—"

"Save your breath, Counselor," Julian interrupted sharply, glaring at the lawyer. "Your client attempted to defraud me under false pretenses regarding the welfare and custody of my minor child. If you take one more step onto my property, I won't be discussing financial settlements; I’ll be calling the police to report harassment and child endangerment."

Eleanor ripped her sunglasses down, revealing eyes flashing with cold fury. The polished, sweet persona vanished completely, replaced by the bitter reality he had almost married. "You are ruining everything, Julian! Do you have any idea how much social capital I invested in you? You’re a widower with baggage, and I was doing you a favor by trying to streamline your domestic situation!"

"Streamline?" Julian repeated, the word tasting like poison on his tongue. "You were planning to banish my daughter. Get off my property, Eleanor. And if either of you contacts me, my daughter, or my staff again, I will release every text message and document I’ve gathered regarding your little boarding school scheme to the press. Let’s see how your social capital holds up then."

Eleanor’s face paled beneath her makeup. She stared at Julian as if she were seeing a stranger—a man she had fundamentally underestimated.

"This isn't over," she hissed quietly, turning on her heel and marching down the steps toward a waiting town car, the attorney scrambling closely behind her.

Julian watched them leave until the car pulled away from the curb. He let out a long breath, closed the heavy front door, and locked it tight. The battle lines were drawn, but he was ready.
