Chapter 3: Leaving the Estate

The heavy oak doors of the manor slammed shut behind them, sealing off the cacophony of gasps, hurried questions, and Eleanor’s sharp, frustrated commands. The cool afternoon air hit Julian’s face like a splash of cold water, grounding him in reality. He carried Chloe down the wide stone steps of the front portico, his heart hammering against his ribs in a chaotic rhythm.
Chloe buried her face in his neck, her tiny frame still wracked with occasional, residual shivers. "Daddy, are we running away?" she whispered, her voice muffled against his white tuxedo jacket.
"No, sweetheart, we aren't running," Julian replied softly, his voice thick with emotion as he adjusted his hold on her. "We are going home. Just the two of us, where we belong."
Parked at the base of the circular driveway was Julian’s midnight-blue sedan, gleaming under the pale sun. He hurried across the gravel, the stones crunching loudly beneath his polished leather shoes. He unlocked the passenger door, gently setting Chloe inside and buckling her seatbelt with meticulous care. He made sure her favorite plush rabbit, which he had thoughtfully tucked into her small backpack earlier that morning, was safely in her lap.
As Julian closed her door and walked around to the driver’s side, the glass front doors of the hall swung open again. Through the tinted windows of the car, he saw Eleanor standing on the top step, flanked by her frantic wedding planner and the aging nanny. Eleanor’s face was twisted in a mixture of anger and disbelief, her white lace train dragging in the dirt of the gravel path as she took a few steps forward.
Julian ignored her entirely. He slipped into the driver’s seat, starting the engine with a push of a button. The dashboard lit up, and the low, reassuring purr of the V8 engine filled the cabin. He shifted into reverse, checking his mirrors with practiced calm, and slowly backed out of the driveway, deliberately steering past Eleanor without a glance.
In the rear-view mirror, he watched her figure shrink, the magnificent estate fading into the distance like a grand stage set after the play had been abruptly canceled. The isolation of the long drive ahead offered a strange, sobering comfort. For two years, Julian had allowed himself to be charmed by Eleanor’s polished sophistication, overlooking the subtle signs of coldness she showed toward household staff and casual acquaintances. He had convinced himself it was merely high-society reserve. Now, the blinders were off, and the terrifying reality of how close he had come to marrying a predator made his hands tremble slightly on the steering wheel.
He glanced over at Chloe. The little girl had already curled up against the door, her eyes heavy with exhaustion from the emotional storm. The tear stains were still visible on her cheeks, but her breathing had slowed to a peaceful, steady rhythm. Julian reached across the console, gently resting his hand over her small fingers.

"I'm sorry, my love," he murmured to the empty car. "I almost let a stranger take you away. But I promise you, things are going to change. Starting today, it’s just us, and I will never let anyone hurt you again."
