Chapter 12: Shadows in the Rearview

The summer heat settled heavily over the suburbs, turning the lawns a dry golden brown and filling the long evenings with the hum of cicadas. Julian and Chloe spent their weekends on outdoor projects, building the promised treehouse in the backyard. It wasn't professional carpentry—the wooden planks were slightly uneven, and the paint job had a few drips—but it was built with laughter, sweat, and shared purpose.

One warm Tuesday evening, Julian drove home late from downtown after wrapping up a major software acquisition meeting for his firm. The traffic on the highway was mercifully light, allowing him to unwind to the steady murmur of a jazz broadcast on the car radio. As he turned onto his quiet residential street, his headlights swept across a sleek black sedan parked illegally near the fire hydrant a few houses down from his own.

Julian’s foot instinctively eased off the accelerator. He slowed his sedan, keeping his eyes fixed on the parked vehicle as he drove past it. Through the tinted driver’s side window, a familiar profile caught his eye—sharp jawline, severe chignon, and a posture of rigid impatience. Eleanor.

Julian pulled into his own driveway, the crunch of the gravel sounding loud in the quiet night. He turned off the engine, but he didn't get out immediately. He sat in the darkened cabin, watching his rear-view mirror. The black sedan remained idling down the street for a few moments before its headlights flickered on and it slowly pulled away, turning the corner and disappearing into the night.

A cold spike of annoyance pricked at Julian’s chest, quickly replaced by a firm resolve. It had been over a year since the wedding disaster. He had assumed Eleanor had moved on, likely entrenched in another high-society engagement or retreat. What was she doing lingering outside his home? Was it petty curiosity, or was she looking for some bizarre form of closure?

He stepped out of the car, locking it with a click of his key fob, and walked up the front steps of the house. The porch light was on, casting a warm yellow glow across the welcome mat. When he unlocked the door and stepped inside, the familiar, comforting scent of lavender and old paper immediately grounded him.

"Daddy?" Chloe’s sleepy voice drifted down from the top of the stairs. She appeared in her pajamas, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand. "Is that you?"

Julian hurried up the stairs, scooping her up into his arms and carrying her back toward her room. "Yes, it’s me, bug. Sorry I’m a little late getting home tonight."

"Did you have a long meeting?" she asked, resting her head against his shoulder.

"A bit long, yes," Julian said, sitting down on the edge of her bed as she climbed back beneath her quilt. "Everything is fine, though. You go back to sleep."

"Will you leave the door open a little bit?" she asked softly.

"Always," Julian promised, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.

As he walked back downstairs to his study, Julian knew he couldn't simply ignore Eleanor’s lingering presence. If she was testing the waters or trying to intimidate them, she needed to know once and for all that her chapter in their lives was permanently closed.
