Chapter 5 - THE GRAVE IN QUEENS

At 5:30 AM, the cold morning mist rolled off the East River as a convoy of four black armored Suburbans pulled into the quiet, wooded cemetery of St. Michael's in northern Queens.
The rain fell in a soft, gentle drizzle.
Liana stood beside Matteo beneath a large black umbrella, holding nine-month-old Nico wrapped warmly in a fleece blanket.
Flanking them were two forensic investigators from the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, accompanied by Detective Marcus Reed from the Major Crimes Division.
In the corner of the small cemetery, beneath an old weeping willow tree, sat a tiny, unmarked patch of earth with a small wooden cross bearing the name: BABY GRAVES — OCTOBER 14.
Two city workers in protective white suits used hydraulic spades to carefully unearth the small white casket resting three feet below the wet soil.
They lifted the small wooden box onto the grass.
The chief medical examiner used a crowbar to pop the brass latches.
CRACK.
The lid swung open.
Inside the casket, wrapped in blue hospital swaddling blankets, was not a deceased infant.
It was a weighted, anatomical medical silicone mannequin, topped with three bags of saline and a bundle of shredded medical paperwork from St. Jude’s Clinic.
Liana covered her mouth with her hand, hot tears of profound, sacred relief streaming down her cheeks as she buried her face in Nico’s soft neck.
"There was no baby here, Liana," Detective Reed announced gently, closing his evidence folder. "Your child was never buried. He has been breathing in your arms the entire time."
Matteo reached out, wrapping his broad, protective arm around Liana’s shoulders, pulling her and the baby close against his chest.
"The cemetery is behind us now, Liana," Matteo murmured softly, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "From this morning forward, your son only knows the light."

Matteo turned to Detective Reed.
"Issue the federal warrants for Dr. Evelyn Vance at JFK Airport," Matteo commanded. "She booked a private charter to Zurich forty minutes ago. Ensure the Port Authority seals the runway before her jet taxis."
