Chapter 18 - NICO’S FIRST DAY

Six months later, on a crisp, radiant September morning, the grand stone portico of The St. Nicholas Early Learning Academy in Oyster Bay was filled with the cheerful laughter of children and parents.

Nico stood on the paved walkway, holding Matteo’s hand on his right and Liana’s hand on his left.

He was nearly three years old now—sturdy, healthy, and full of boundless curiosity. He wore a neat navy school blazer, gray shorts, and polished leather shoes, with a small yellow backpack strapped over his shoulders.

His hazel eyes were bright and completely fearless.

"Look, Mommy!" Nico pointed toward the wooden playground where a dozen children were playing on the swings. "The big slide!"

Liana knelt on the pavement, adjusting the collar of his blazer, gently brushing a soft dark curl from his forehead.

She looked at her son—the boy who had spent the first nine months of his life in a cold nursery, screaming in terror from the phantom shadows of the women who stole him.

Now, his face was smooth, his cheeks rosy, and his heart knew nothing but total, unconditional love.

"You're going to make so many friends today, my brave little prince," Liana whispered, her voice thick with maternal pride.

Nico wrapped both of his arms around her neck, planting a warm, wet kiss on her cheek. "I love you, Mommy."

He turned to Matteo, raising his arms. "Pick me up, Daddy!"

Matteo scooped his son high into the morning air, letting Nico laugh heartily before setting him back on his feet and giving him a firm, loving high-five.

"Have fun today, champ," Matteo smiled warmly. "Daddy and Mommy will be right here at three o'clock."

"Okay!" Nico cheered.

He turned and trotted confidently through the front archway, waving happily to his teacher, without looking back in fear once.

Liana stood up, leaning her head against Matteo’s shoulder, a single tear of pure, sacred gratitude slipping down her cheek.

Matteo wrapped his strong arm securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

"He's flying, Liana," Matteo murmured softly.

"Because you gave him wings, Matteo," Liana smiled, turning to kiss his cheek.
