Chapter 10 - THE UNBROKEN HORIZON

One year after the morning Liana dropped the linens on the foyer marble.

The summer sun rose warmly over the calm, sparkling blue waters of Long Island Sound, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of rose, gold, and sapphire.

Down on the private white-sand beach bordering the Varric Coastal Estate in Oyster Bay, two-year-old Nico was running along the water's edge with bare feet sinking into the cool, wet sand, wearing a colorful yellow sunsuit, laughing joyfully as our new golden retriever puppy, Barnaby, chased the gentle morning surf.

"Mommy! Daddy! Look at the shell!" Nico called out, holding up a smooth, polished white sea stone with both hands.

Sitting on the wide cedar sun deck overlooking the beach, Matteo and Liana sat side by side on a comfortable outdoor sofa, holding hands in the warm ocean breeze.

Liana wore an elegant white linen dress, her skin glowing with radiant, peaceful health, her dark hair blowing softly across her shoulders.

Around her neck, resting against her chest, hung a delicate platinum necklace engraved with three simple words: Forever Whole, Forever Ours.

My smartphone rested on the table.

On the screen was an automated notification from the Federal Bureau of Prisons:

INMATE STATUS VERIFICATION: SOFIA VARRIC — FCI DANBURY (YEAR 1 OF 35).

INMATE STATUS VERIFICATION: EVELYN VANCE — FCI OTISVILLE (YEAR 1 OF 32).

CIVIL RESTITUTION BALANCE: $35,000,000.00 (PAID IN FULL TO LIANA GRAVES MATERNAL FOUNDATION).

Liana looked at the notification for two seconds, closed the screen, and placed the phone face-down on the cedar table without a single drop of bitterness, anger, or lingering shadow.

The cold hospital room was gone. The empty grave in Queens was dust.

And the little boy who had once screamed for weeks in the dark was now running free under the golden sun, his laughter ringing out across the waves like church bells across the water.

Nico sprinted up the wooden deck steps, dripping with ocean water, throwing his small, warm arms around both Matteo and Liana, giggling as Barnaby rested his sandy paws on the lowest step.

Matteo scooped his son up into his arms, lifting him high into the summer sky as Nico squealed with pure, unbroken delight.

He pulled Liana close against his side, wrapping his broad arm securely around her waist, kissing the crown of her head under the warm morning light.

"How does the morning feel, Liana?" Matteo whispered softly.

Liana leaned her head against his chest, feeling the strong, steady beating of his heart, looking out over the endless blue horizon stretching toward the sun.

"It feels like home, Matteo," Liana smiled softly, her eyes shining with eternal peace. "A real, safe, unbroken home."

May you like

Matteo held his family tight against his chest, took a deep, clean, completely free breath of the ocean air, and smiled into the bright, endless dawn.

The screaming was over. The truth had won. And their future stood tall, magnificent, and forever unbroken.
