Chapter 6 - Clara's Awakening

Preparation for the trial was grueling. Clara had to relive every moment of her captivity with the prosecutors. She had to detail the beatings, the starvation, and the psychological torture Victoria inflicted on her.
There were days when the trauma was too much. Clara would wake up screaming in the middle of the night, terrified she was back in the concrete box. But every time she woke up, Julian was there. He held her, rocked her, and reminded her she was safe.
One afternoon, the prosecutors brought in one of the maids who had been complicit in the abuse. A woman named Maria, who was taking a plea deal in exchange for testifying against Victoria.
Maria sat across from Clara in the sterile conference room, unable to meet Clara's eyes.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Vance," Maria wept. "Victoria threatened to deport my family. She said she would ruin us if we told Mr. Vance you were down there. I didn't want to hurt you."
Clara sat perfectly still. The old Clara might have offered forgiveness. But the woman who survived the basement had a spine made of titanium.
"You watched her starve me, Maria," Clara said, her voice ice-cold and unwavering. "You watched her kick me when I was scrubbing the floors. You served Julian his coffee while I was bleeding in a room beneath his feet. You don't get my forgiveness just because you were scared."

Maria sobbed harder, burying her face in her hands.
Julian watched his wife from the corner of the room, a profound sense of awe washing over him. Victoria hadn't broken Clara. She had forged her into a warrior.
