Chapter 2 - The Hospital Confessions

The blue and red lights of the police cruisers painted the front of the Vance estate in frantic colors. Clara was wrapped in Julian’s heavy cashmere coat, sitting in the back of an ambulance. She refused to let go of his hand. Even when the paramedics tried to check her vitals, her grip on Julian was like a vice.

"I'm not leaving you," Julian promised, pressing his forehead against hers. "Never again."

At the hospital, the reality of Clara's captivity was laid bare. As the female doctor gently examined her, Julian stood by, his heart breaking into a million jagged pieces. Clara was severely malnourished. Her ribs showed through her pale skin. Her wrists and ankles bore the faded, overlapping scars of zip-ties and heavy ropes.

"How?" Julian asked, his voice cracking as Clara finally drifted into a medicated sleep in the hospital bed. He looked at the detective assigned to the case, a hardened veteran named Russo. "How was she in my house this whole time?"

Detective Russo flipped open his notepad, looking grim. "The East Wing, Mr. Vance. The section of the estate you boarded up during the renovations four years ago."

Julian felt the blood drain from his face. The East Wing. It had been closed off due to black mold and structural issues. Victoria, who had managed the estate's staff and renovations as his 'trusted' executive assistant, had handled the contractors.

"She built a soundproof sub-basement under the old servant's quarters," Russo explained, disgust lacing his words. "That's where she kept your wife. Kept her drugged and locked away. A month ago, Victoria got arrogant. She stopped the heavy sedatives and forced Clara to join the cleaning staff to scrub the floors at night, strictly when you were out of town or asleep. It was a power trip. She wanted to humiliate her."

"The staff," Julian said, his eyes darkening with a lethal focus. "They knew."

"They were paid off," Russo confirmed. "Heavily. Victoria was using your own company's slush funds to keep them quiet. But don't worry, Mr. Vance. We have them all in custody."

Julian looked at his sleeping wife. The innocent woman he had married, broken by a monster hiding in plain sight.

"Detective," Julian said quietly. "I want Victoria Sterling placed in solitary confinement. And I want the media to know everything."
