Chapter 9 - The Dead Man's Ledger.

Martin Vale raised both empty hands as Damian aimed a pistol at his chest.
"If you shoot me, you lose the only person who knows where Harper and Lucas landed."
Damian kept the weapon steady.
"Open the floor."
"Not yet."
Victor moved to Damian's left.
His face had gone strangely pale.
"You were declared dead eighteen years ago."
Martin smiled.
"Your father signed the report."
Victor's eyes hardened.
"My father identified your body."
"Your father identified what he was told to identify."
Damian stepped closer.
"Why are you here?"
Martin looked around the ballroom.
"Because this house was built on secrets your father stole from me."
He claimed he had created the original security architecture for the Cole family and discovered that Damian's father, Henry Cole, was moving money through shell companies tied to politicians and contractors.
When Martin threatened to expose him, Henry arranged Martin's disappearance.
"And now you punish Harper?"
Martin's smile vanished.
"I did not put her in that chamber."
Victor laughed once.
"Convenient."
"I came back because Arthur Bell sent for me before he died."
Damian watched him carefully.
"Arthur is dead."
"Yes."
Martin reached slowly into his coat.
Victor raised his weapon.
Martin removed a small flash drive.
"And this is why."
Mara entered from the corridor and took the drive only after scanning it.
The files contained copies of bank transfers, security logs, and old insurance records.
At the center was a scanned ledger signed by Henry Cole.
One column listed payments to a company called NORTHSTAR CUSTODIAL.
Mara searched the registration.
"Northstar belongs to Victor's father."
Victor stared at the screen.
"My father was paid by Henry?"
Martin nodded.
"To keep quiet after the crash."
Victor lunged at him.
Damian stopped him.
"Where are Harper and Lucas?"
Martin pointed toward the east wall.
"The hatch drops into a slide tunnel."
Victor tore open the service panel.
They found Lucas at the bottom with a dislocated shoulder.
Harper was beside him, conscious and furious.
"He isn't the one," she said the moment she saw Martin.
Damian helped her up.
"How do you know?"
"Because the man who locked me below smelled like cedar smoke."
Martin frowned.
"I quit smoking twenty years ago."
Victor went still.
Damian noticed.
"What?"
Victor looked away.
"My father smoked cedar cigars."
Silence settled over the tunnel.
Martin spoke softly.
"So did Arthur Bell."
Damian felt the story shift again.
Arthur had been dead for six months, but his private storage box remained unopened.
They left the estate before dawn under a new security plan that Mara created without Victor's system.
The bank director personally opened Arthur's box.
Inside was no money.
There was only the original ledger, a sealed letter addressed to Damian, and a second envelope marked FOR HARPER LANE.
Harper stared at her name.
"I never met Arthur privately."
Damian opened his letter first.
Arthur's handwriting covered three pages.
The first line made his chest tighten.
HENRY'S DEATH WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT, BUT THE MAN WHO ORDERED IT STILL EATS AT YOUR TABLE.
Damian looked across the private bank room.
Lucas was beside him.
Victor stood near the door.
Martin watched from a chair.
Mara held the tablet.
Harper slowly opened her envelope.
A single photograph slid into her hand.
She turned it over and stopped breathing.
"Damian."
May you like
The photograph showed Arthur Bell alive.
The date stamp was from two weeks ago.
