Chapter 2 - The Name Behind the Fear.

Damian threw one hand against the rising hatch before it could seal the opening.

Victor lunged forward and jammed a metal baton beneath the edge.

The mechanism shrieked and stopped.

"Power cut to the floor system," Damian ordered.

One of the guards sprinted toward the security room.

Damian descended the ladder himself.

The chamber was barely tall enough for him to stand, and the concrete smelled of dust, rust, and stale water.

Harper flinched when he reached for her.

That reaction angered him more than the bruises.

"It's me."

She forced herself to nod.

Ella cried above them, calling for her mother again and again.

Damian wrapped his suit jacket around Harper and helped her toward the ladder.

She grabbed his wrist before he could move.

"No hospital through the front gate."

"Why?"

"Because they know your routes."

Damian stared at her.

"Who are they?"

Harper's eyes shifted toward the ceiling.

"I don't know how many."

That answer was worse.

Upstairs, Victor cleared the foyer and locked down the estate.

Lucas came down from the staircase demanding explanations.

"What happened to Harper?"

Damian ignored him.

A private physician arrived from the guest wing and treated Harper in the library because Damian refused to let her leave the mansion yet.

Ella sat pressed against her mother's side, holding three of Harper's fingers as if any stronger grip might hurt her.

The doctor confirmed dehydration, a mild concussion, and bruising consistent with restraint.

"No fractures," he said.

"She needs imaging and observation, but she is stable."

Damian waited until the doctor stepped away.

"Tell me what happened."

Harper looked at Ella.

Damian understood.

"Victor, take Ella to the kitchen and get her something warm."

Harper's hand closed around her daughter's wrist.

"No."

Victor stopped.

The room went quiet.

Harper looked directly at Damian.

"She stays where I can see her."

Victor's face remained calm, but a muscle moved near his jaw.

Damian pulled a chair closer.

"Then she stays."

Harper took a slow breath.

"Three nights ago, I was closing the west office when I heard someone in your father's study."

Damian's father had been dead for nine years, and the study remained locked except during annual inventory.

"I thought it was Lucas."

Lucas leaned against the bookshelves.

"Why would you think that?"

"Because I heard your voice."

Lucas straightened.

Harper continued before he could object.

"I opened the inner door and saw a man at the safe."

Damian watched her eyes.

"Who?"

Harper swallowed.

"He had a security override card."

Victor spoke from behind Damian.

"Half the senior team carries one."

Harper looked at him.

"Not that kind."

For the first time, Victor's composure cracked.

"What kind?"

"The black master card."

Damian knew only two existed.

One was in his own private safe.

The other belonged to Victor.

Lucas laughed once, without humor.

"Well, that narrows things down."

Victor's stare cut toward him.

Damian raised a hand.

"Let her finish."

Harper's fingers began shaking.

"The man turned around."

Ella buried her face against Harper's arm.

Harper closed her eyes.

"I knew him."

Damian leaned closer.

"Say the name."

She opened her eyes and looked not at Victor, but at Lucas.

"Before I could see his face clearly, someone hit me from behind."

Lucas exhaled.

Victor said nothing.

Harper reached beneath the blanket the doctor had wrapped around her.

From the torn lining of her cardigan, she pulled a tiny brass key.

"But I took this from the desk before they caught me."

Damian recognized the engraved number instantly.

It was the key to a bank box his father had ordered sealed the week before he died.

No one outside the family was supposed to know it existed.

Lucas went pale.

May you like

Victor did not.

That frightened Damian more.
