Chapter 7 - The Vanguard SyndicateI didn't flinch. I kept my hand steady inside my pocket, my fingers wrapping around the grip of the compact Sig Sauer P365 I had retrieved from my hidden stash in Brooklyn before coming to the hotel.

"Show yourself," I commanded, my voice echoing off the glass walls, steady and devoid of fear.

A tall man stepped out from the shadows near the spiral staircase. He wore an immaculate midnight-blue tuxedo, a white carnation pinned to his lapel. His face was sharp, framed by neatly trimmed dark hair and cold, calculating amber eyes. He looked to be in his early forties, carrying the effortless, terrifying aura of a man who owned governments as easily as neckties.

"Allow me to introduce myself," the man said, offering a slight, mocking bow. "Julian Vance—no relation to your idiotic cousin Victoria, thankfully. I am the regional director of the Vanguard Syndicate."

The name from my mother's warning letter hit me like a physical blow.

The Vanguard Syndicate.

"So, you're the parasite pulling the strings behind Arthur's little coup," I said, stepping away from the open safe, squaring my shoulders.

Julian smiled, a thin, humorless stretching of his lips. "Parasite is such an ugly word, Charlotte. Let's call ourselves... structural reorganizers. The Solmere Empire has grown too large, too independent for traditional corporate governance. Your mother understood that eventually. Unfortunately, she refused to cooperate when we asked her to sign over the controlling shares. So... accidents happened on the highway."

My blood ran cold. The rage that had been simmering inside me instantly boiled over into a lethal, laser-focused fury.

"You killed her," I whispered, the words trembling slightly.

"Her brakes failed," Julian shrugged nonchalantly, walking slowly toward the bar cart to pour himself a glass of whiskey. "Tragic, really. Just like your sudden 'mental breakdown' was supposed to be tragic. But you slipped through the net. You crawled out of the gutter, coded a bypass, and made a dramatic entrance."

He took a sip of the amber liquid, his amber eyes locking onto mine.

"Which brings us to your current predicament, my dear. You can hand over the black ledger in that safe, sign over the deed to this hotel, and quietly disappear into the sunset with a few million dollars to comfort your exile. Or... you can share your mother's fate before the sun rises."

Julian raised his glass in a mock toast.

"What'll it be, little heir?"
