Chapter 4 - The Lavender Basin and the Secret Conversation-4

The afternoon sun cast long amber rays across the polished marble floor of the library as the heavy grandfather clock struck four. Massimo Rinaldi sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring blankly out at the manicured hedges where the autumn wind was beginning to strip the last remaining leaves from the branches. His mind felt sluggish, a heavy, cotton-like fog pressing against his thoughts—a subtle, constant side effect of the very medication Dr. Hale administered every morning under the guise of pain management.

Then came the soft, familiar scuff of tiny shoes against the Persian rug.

Nina appeared in the doorway, carrying her little wooden basin with both hands. Water sloshed slightly over the brim, scented heavily with the calming aroma of lavender oil that Carla had prepared in the kitchen just moments before.

Massimo’s stern, cold features instantly softened. A genuine, weary smile broke across his face, driving away the dark shadows of his internal thoughts. "Ah, my favorite doctor has arrived," he said, his deep voice carrying a rare note of warmth. "I was beginning to think you forgot about me today, little one."

"Never, Uncle Massimo," Nina declared proudly, waddling over to his wheelchair and setting the basin down with a gentle thud on the carpet. She immediately knelt, rolled up the cuffs of her miniature dress sleeves, and began expertly unbuckling his shoes just as she did every single day.

From the doorway down the hall, half-hidden behind the pillar, Dean Foster watched the scene with a look of quiet, sneering amusement. He leaned against the wall, taking a slow drag from an electronic cigarette, exhaling a thin cloud of blue-gray vapor into the air. To Dean, the child was nothing more than an amusing domestic distraction, a harmless pet that kept the broken mafia boss mildly entertained while the final legal pieces of the Rinaldi empire were safely transferred into Camille’s name.

"Still playing nursemaid, boss?" Dean called out, stepping into the library with a casual, easy-going stride that masked the razor-sharp predator underneath.

Massimo didn't turn his head immediately. He kept his eyes fixed on Nina, who was now carefully pouring warm lavender water over his motionless ankles. "She has more empathy in her little finger than half the capos sitting on our board of directors, Dean," Massimo replied, his tone chillingly flat as he finally looked up to meet his right-hand man's gaze.

Dean offered an easy, disarming laugh, shoving his hands into the pockets of his trousers. "Can't argue with that. Kids say and do the darndest things. By the way, the meeting with the port authority representatives is set for tomorrow morning. I’ll handle the negotiations since you prefer to stay sequestered here."

"No," Massimo said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the absolute authority that had kept him at the top of the underworld for over a decade. "I will patch into the secure conference feed from my desk here. I am still the head of this family, Dean. Never forget that."

A microscopic flash of irritation crossed Dean’s eyes, vanishing so quickly that only someone watching him with extreme suspicion would have caught it. "Of course, Massimo. Just looking out for your health. Dr. Hale specifically emphasized that you need to avoid stress."

As Dean turned and walked away, murmuring polite pleasantries, Nina paused her washing. She looked up at Massimo, her small face solemn and thoughtful.

"Uncle Massimo?" she whispered softly, just loud enough for him to hear over the splashing water.

"Yes, little one?" Massimo leaned down closer to her level.

"The angry man with the white coat dropped something yesterday," Nina murmured, her dark eyes darting nervously toward the doorway where Dean had just exited. "It wasn't a candy. Mommy said bad things live in little white buttons."

Massimo’s gray eyes narrowed instantly. The casual warmth vanished from his expression, replaced by the razor-sharp intellect that had made the Rinaldi name a terror across the East Coast. He didn't ask her to elaborate aloud; he knew the walls of this mansion had ears everywhere. Instead, he reached down, gently patting her curly hair, and whispered back, "Keep your secrets safe, Nina. And keep washing my feet. They might just wake up sooner than anyone thinks."
