Chapter 5 - THE MEDICINE CABINET

Police searched Whitmore House.

The mansion belonged to Evelyn through a family trust.

Ryan had grown up there.

He remembered polished floors, silent dinners, and doors that closed gently before punishment began.

Inside Evelyn’s private bathroom, officers found prescription bottles labeled for three different people.

Emily Whitmore.

Maya Whitmore.

Ryan Whitmore.

Maya had never been prescribed anything by Dr. Crane.

Neither had Ryan.

The bottle bearing his name contained a sedative.

Detective Brooks asked whether he had experienced unusual fatigue.

Ryan remembered the monthly family dinners.

Evelyn always poured his whiskey.

He often woke the next morning with headaches.

Sometimes he forgot portions of the evening.

His mother said business stress was affecting him.

She encouraged him to give Marcus more authority.

She encouraged him to let her manage the family trust.

The search uncovered photographs.

Ryan asleep at dinner.

Ryan stumbling beside the stairs.

Ryan sitting with his head in his hands.

A draft incapacity petition described alcohol dependence and cognitive decline.

Evelyn planned to remove him too.

The petition would activate only if he resisted Oliver’s guardianship transfer.

Maya stared at the document.

“She had a plan for everyone.”

Ryan nodded.

“The person changed.”

“The method didn’t.”

Behind Evelyn’s library wall, investigators found a locked cabinet.

Inside were files labeled with family names.

Emily.

Daniel.

Maya.

Ryan.

Oliver.

Daniel Whitmore had been Ryan’s father.

He died eight years earlier after a sudden fall from the balcony at Whitmore House.

Police ruled it an accident.

He had consumed alcohol and sedatives.

Ryan believed grief and medication caused the fall.

The file contained messages between Evelyn and Dr. Crane.

Daniel discovered the trust transfers.

Increase the evening dose.

He must appear confused before the board meeting.

Another message arrived the night before his death.

Balcony door left unsecured.

Do not call ambulance until breathing stops.

Ryan dropped the page.

The room tilted.

Detective Brooks caught his shoulder.

“My father.”

“We do not know yet exactly what happened,” she said.

“But his death is being reopened.”

Evelyn’s control had not begun after Daniel died.

His death may have been the largest act used to protect it.

The family empire that Ryan believed his mother saved after tragedy may have been obtained through murder.
