Chapter 11 - DANIEL’S BALCONY

The investigation into Daniel Whitmore’s death reopened.

The original police file described an accidental fall.

He had alcohol and sedatives in his blood.

The balcony railing had been loose.

Evelyn told police Daniel was depressed.

Ryan remembered his father differently.

Tired.

Frustrated.

Secretive during the final weeks.

Daniel repeatedly asked Ryan to meet him without Evelyn.

Ryan postponed.

Company emergencies always appeared.

Marcus had not worked for Ryan then.

Another assistant controlled the schedule.

She was found living in Florida.

She admitted Evelyn paid her to cancel the meetings.

Daniel recorded one conversation before his death.

The file had been stored with the outside law firm.

Evelyn’s voice remained calm.

“You will not divide the shares.”

“They belong to both children,” Daniel said.

“Emily is irresponsible.”

“Because she challenges you?”

“Because she cannot be controlled.”

Daniel answered:

“That is not illness.”

A long silence followed.

Then Evelyn said:

“If you leave me, the board will believe you have become confused.”

“Arthur has already documented the episodes.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You built the diagnosis before the disease.”

The recording ended.

A forensic engineer examined the balcony.

The railing bolts had been loosened with a tool.

Photographs from the police archive showed fresh metal scratches.

The tool was found years later inside Evelyn’s maintenance cabinet.

DNA could no longer prove who used it.

But messages between Evelyn and Crane established planning.

Increase the dose tonight.

He insists on meeting Ryan tomorrow.

Another message arrived after midnight.

The fall resolved the vote.

Prosecutors charged Evelyn with Daniel’s murder.

Ryan received the news beside Maya in a courthouse conference room.

He had asked her to attend only if she wanted.

She came because Oliver was with Emily.

Ryan covered his face.

“I ignored him too.”

Maya sat across from him.

“You were manipulated.”

“I was also an adult.”

“Yes.”

Both truths remained.

Ryan had been trained to obey Evelyn.

He also benefited from avoiding conflict.

He inherited leadership after Daniel died.

He accepted his mother’s version because examining it might have required giving up the life built afterward.

Grief and guilt could explain blindness.

They could not restore Daniel’s final days.
