Chapter 1: The Attack Inside The Hospital Suite

The Billionaire's Wife They Tried to Destroy

Chapter 1: The Attack Inside The Hospital Suite

The first sound wasn't a scream.

It was the sharp crack of glass.

A crystal vase exploded against the polished marble floor of the luxury hospital suite, sending glittering shards in every direction.

For one frozen second, nobody moved.

Then chaos began.

Khloe Thorne Blackwell pressed one trembling hand against her swollen stomach.

Seven months.

Their daughter kicked gently beneath her palm as if sensing her mother's racing heartbeat.

"It's okay," Khloe whispered. "Mommy's here."

The words were more for herself than for the baby.

An hour earlier, she had been smiling beneath the dazzling lights of the Blackwell Foundation Charity Gala.

Cameras flashed endlessly.

Journalists asked the same questions.

"How does it feel to become the future mother of the Blackwell heir?"

"Will Ethan Blackwell retire after the baby is born?"

"Is it true the Blackwell fortune will pass directly to your daughter?"

Khloe answered each question with grace, even though every smile felt heavier than the last.

She had married one of the richest men in America.

People admired the diamonds.

The designer gowns.

The perfect photographs.

They never saw the price of living inside a family whose name carried more power than some governments.

By the end of the evening, exhaustion settled deep into her bones.

Her obstetrician, Dr. Melissa Carter, insisted she rest before traveling home.

"The private maternity suite upstairs is empty," the doctor had said warmly. "Lie down for an hour. Your blood pressure is slightly elevated."

Khloe agreed.

She wanted nothing more than silence.

Now she stood alone beside the panoramic window overlooking the city skyline.

Rain streaked the glass.

Lightning flashed across the dark sky.

The gala music drifted faintly upward from the ballroom below.

For the first time all evening...

She could breathe.

Her phone buzzed.

Ethan Calling.

A smile finally appeared.

She answered immediately.

"Hey."

His deep voice softened the moment he heard hers.

"How's my favorite girl?"

Khloe laughed quietly.

"You'll have to be more specific."

"You."

A pause.

"And the little one."

The baby kicked again.

Khloe smiled.

"She heard you."

"I'll be upstairs in ten minutes."

"You don't have to leave the donors."

"They can survive without me."

She leaned against the window.

"They'll probably donate more if you're there."

"I already have everything I want."

His voice lowered.

"I just want my family."

Khloe closed her eyes.

No matter what the newspapers wrote about Ethan Blackwell, they never understood him.

They called him ruthless.

Cold.

Untouchable.

The youngest billionaire to transform Blackwell Global into one of the most influential companies in the world.

To the public, he was a business legend.

To Khloe...

He was the man who still tucked a blanket around her when she fell asleep on the couch.

The man who read parenting books in secret because he was afraid of making mistakes.

The man who kissed their unborn daughter every morning before leaving for work.

"I love you," she whispered.

"I know."

She laughed.

"You were supposed to say it back."

"I do."

A smile reached his voice.

"I just wanted to hear you say it first."

Someone knocked on the suite door.

Three slow knocks.

Khloe glanced toward it.

"That must be Dr. Carter."

"I'll see you in a few minutes."

"I'll be waiting."

The call ended.

Khloe walked toward the entrance.

Without checking the security monitor.

Without asking who it was.

Because this was Blackwell Memorial Hospital.

The safest private hospital in the country.

Or so everyone believed.

She unlocked the door.

A woman stood outside.

Elegant.

Perfectly dressed.

Dark hair pulled into a flawless knot.

A bouquet of white lilies rested in her hands.

"I'm sorry," the woman said politely.

"I think I have the wrong room."

Khloe smiled kindly.

"It happens."

She reached to close the door.

The woman shoved it open.

Hard.

The heavy wooden door slammed into Khloe's shoulder.

Pain shot through her body.

She stumbled backward.

"What are you—"

The bouquet hit the floor.

White lilies scattered across the marble.

Hidden beneath them...

A metal object.

The stranger picked it up.

A polished steel flashlight.

Heavy enough to be used as a weapon.

Khloe's heart stopped.

"You shouldn't have married him."

The woman's voice changed.

No longer polite.

Only hatred remained.

Khloe stepped back instinctively.

"I don't know who you are."

"Oh..."

A bitter smile spread across the stranger's face.

"But I know exactly who you are."

"You stole everything."

Khloe's mind raced.

Security.

Where was security?

The panic button.

Near the bed.

Too far away.

She kept one hand over her stomach.

"Please..."

"If you want money—"

"I don't want your money!"

The woman screamed.

"I want my life back!"

The flashlight swung.

Khloe ducked.

It smashed into the wall, leaving a deep crack in the expensive paneling.

She ran.

As fast as a seven-months-pregnant woman could.

The attacker grabbed her hair.

Khloe cried out.

She twisted desperately, breaking free.

A handful of chestnut hair remained in the woman's fist.

"You ruined everything!"

The flashlight came down again.

This time striking Khloe across her ribs.

Pain exploded through her side.

She collapsed onto one knee.

Her daughter kicked violently.

"No..."

Khloe whispered, wrapping both arms around her stomach.

"Please..."

The woman raised the weapon again.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Not sadness.

Obsession.

"If I can't have Ethan..."

She whispered.

"Neither can you."

The blow never landed.

The suite door suddenly opened.

A young nurse stepped inside carrying medication.

She froze.

Her eyes widened.

"What are you doing?"

The attacker turned.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Khloe crawled toward the emergency call button beside the bed.

Her fingertips brushed the red switch.

The woman saw.

"No!"

She lunged.

The flashlight struck Khloe squarely in the back.

The force sent Khloe crashing against the bedside table.

A sharp pain ripped through her abdomen.

She gasped.

Then looked down.

Blood.

A single crimson drop landed on the white marble floor.

Then another.

Then another.

"No..."

Her voice barely existed.

The baby stopped moving.

For one horrifying second...

There was nothing.

No kick.

No movement.

Only silence.

The nurse screamed.

"Code Gold!"

Hospital alarms erupted through the hallway.

Footsteps thundered outside.

The attacker panicked.

She grabbed the bouquet wrapper from the floor, trying to erase her fingerprints.

But she made one fatal mistake.

She looked directly into the suite's ceiling camera.

A tiny red recording light blinked.

She smiled.

Then reached into her handbag.

Pressed a small remote.

The red light disappeared.

The camera went dark.

Seconds later, security officers burst into the room.

The attacker was gone.

Only an open emergency exit door swung slowly in the hallway.

Doctors rushed inside.

Machines beeped wildly.

Nurses surrounded Khloe.

"Blood pressure dropping!"

"Prepare the operating room!"

"Call neonatal surgery!"

"We're losing the baby's heartbeat!"

Khloe could barely hear them.

The room faded in and out.

Faces blurred.

Voices became distant echoes.

Someone squeezed her hand.

A nurse.

Young.

Terrified.

"Stay with me."

Khloe forced her eyes open.

She whispered only three words.

"My... baby..."

"We're trying."

"No..."

Khloe shook her head weakly.

"Tell... Ethan..."

Her breathing became shallow.

"Protect... her..."

Then darkness swallowed everything.

Downstairs, inside the grand ballroom, Ethan Blackwell finished shaking hands with an international ambassador.

His phone vibrated.

Not a call.

An emergency alert.

BLACKWELL MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

CODE GOLD

PATIENT: KHLOE BLACKWELL

Every color disappeared from his face.

Without saying a word, he ran.

Guests watched in confusion as the billionaire sprinted through the ballroom.

Security officers chased after him.

Elevator doors closed too slowly.

He took the stairs instead.

Twenty-three floors.

Without stopping.

As Ethan reached the maternity wing, the operating room doors slammed shut in front of him.

Blood stained the floor outside.

A single white lily lay crushed beneath someone's shoe.

Dr. Melissa Carter stepped toward him.

For the first time in her twenty-five-year career...

She didn't know what to say.

"Ethan..."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"My wife."

The doctor swallowed.

"She's alive."

"And my daughter?"

Silence.

The doctor's eyes filled with tears.

"We're doing everything we can."

Ethan looked through the small window in the operating room door.

He saw surgeons surrounding Khloe.

Machines flashing.

Doctors shouting.

Blood covering white sheets.

His jaw tightened.

Then he noticed something else.

A security camera above the hallway.

The indicator light was off.

Someone had turned it off.

Ethan slowly turned toward the hospital's security chief.

His expression never changed.

"Seal every exit."

The security chief hesitated.

"Mr. Blackwell—"

"I wasn't asking."

The hallway became deathly quiet.

Ethan looked once more at the operating room.

Then spoke the words that would change countless lives.

"Whoever walked into my wife's room..."

"They entered this hospital."

May you like

"They will not leave it."
