Chapter 14 - MONDAY AT EIGHT

Michael arrived at Lawson Medical Technologies at 7:42 a.m.
He wore a navy suit.
Red tie.
The same combination he wore to major investor meetings.
He looked confident on the lobby camera.
That was the strangest part.
Even after Daniel.
Police.
The bank freeze.
Vanessa disappearing.
Some part of him still believed he could talk his way back into power.
The boardroom filled.
Independent directors.
Trust counsel.
Naomi.
Gregory Shaw.
Michael.
Two bank representatives.
And me.
I entered last.
Michael stared.
“You were supposed to be in Lake Geneva.”
I sat across from him.
“I changed my plans.”
The board chair opened the meeting.
Michael immediately stood.
“My wife is experiencing a significant mental-health crisis.”
“She has abandoned our home.”
“Interfered with company operations.”
“Manipulated our son.”
“And frozen legitimate financial activity.”
No one interrupted.
He continued.
“I am requesting temporary executive authority under the emergency trust provisions.”
Then Naomi slid one document across the table.
“Denied.”
Michael looked down.
Independent trustee determination.
Emergency manager disqualified for attempted self-dealing.
His face changed.
“What is this?”
Naomi answered.
“Your transfer to Calder Holdings triggered Section 18.”
“I don’t own Calder.”
Another document.
Corporate beneficial-ownership records.
Thirty percent.
Michael’s name through a nominee company.
He sat.
Then Gregory Shaw stood.
“I support Michael’s request.”
The board chair turned toward him.
Naomi placed another file down.
“Mr. Shaw, before you vote, you should know your six-million-dollar compensation agreement with Michael has been discovered.”
Gregory’s face went white.
He stopped talking.
Then I spoke.
“My father built this company.”
“Not Michael.”
“Not me alone.”
“Thousands of people built it.”
“But my trust owns the controlling shares.”
“And I am not incapacitated.”
Michael laughed.
“This is exactly what I mean.”
“She thinks everyone is against her.”
Then the conference room speakers activated.
His own voice.
Once she leaves Friday, we have seventy-two hours.
Michael stopped breathing.
Vanessa’s voice followed.
Her money is moved?
Michael.
Her vote is mine.
Daniel is with me.
Silence.
No one looked at me.
Everyone looked at him.
Michael whispered.
“That was taken out of context.”
I almost smiled.
“All six months?”
Then Dr. Price’s original medical notes appeared.
Then the falsified letter.
Then bank records.
Then the custody petition drafted before I left.
Then Margaret’s payment agreement.
Then Vanessa’s recordings.
One fact after another.
Michael’s empire lasted nineteen minutes.
The board voted.
He was removed from every corporate position pending formal proceedings.
Gregory was terminated.
Security disabled Michael’s access badge while he was still sitting at the table.
His phone buzzed.
He looked down.
ACCOUNT ACCESS REVOKED.
Then another.
CORPORATE EMAIL DISABLED.
Then another.
EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY TERMINATED.
Michael looked at me.
“You planned this.”
“No.”
I said.
May you like
“You did.”
“I just listened.”
