Chapter 12 - VANESSA RAN WITH THE NINE MILLION

Vanessa’s condo was empty.

Closet half-cleared.

Laptop gone.

Passport gone.

Her car was found at O’Hare.

No flight in her legal name.

The nine-million-dollar securities position had been liquidated Friday afternoon.

Proceeds moved to Larkspur Partners.

Then to an offshore account.

Naomi stared at the transaction chain.

“She prepared an exit.”

“For Michael?”

“Maybe.”

Detective Ramirez shook his head.

“No.”

He showed us an email recovered from Vanessa’s deleted folder.

Draft.

Never sent.

MICHAEL THINKS CALDER IS HIS.

HE DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT LARKSPUR.

Vanessa had created her own betrayal.

Michael planned to use her.

She planned to steal from him first.

A conspiracy built on disloyalty had finally become honest about itself.

Then Vanessa called me.

Unknown number.

“Rachel.”

I recognized her immediately.

“Where are you?”

“Not important.”

“You took nine million dollars.”

“That money was supposed to disappear anyway.”

“That does not make it yours.”

She laughed nervously.

“You think Michael was going to keep his promises?”

“No.”

“I know he wasn’t.”

Silence.

“You heard something.”

I said.

“Or found something.”

Vanessa began crying.

“He called me temporary.”

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

“So you stole from me instead.”

“I earned something.”

“For helping him destroy my life?”

She stopped.

Then said.

“You don’t know what he said about you.”

“I know enough.”

“No.”

“He hates your family.”

“My father.”

“The company.”

“The name.”

“He said he spent twelve years being Mr. Rachel Lawson.”

That hurt.

Not because I had not sensed it.

Because he had once told me taking my surname professionally was an honor.

Vanessa continued.

“He said when this was over, people would finally know he built everything.”

I looked toward my father’s photograph on Naomi’s shelf.

Michael did not want money alone.

He wanted authorship.

My life had become evidence against his ego.

“Return the money.”

I said.

“Why?”

“Because you are already in serious trouble.”

“And because Michael will blame you for everything.”

She went quiet.

“He already is.”

That meant they had spoken.

Vanessa whispered.

“I have evidence.”

“What kind?”

“Recordings.”

“Emails.”

“The custody plan.”

“Gregory’s payments.”

“Margaret’s deal.”

“Everything.”

“Then surrender.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You think police protect women like me?”

Detective Ramirez leaned toward the phone.

I said.

“They protect witnesses who cooperate.”

Vanessa knew I was not alone.

She disconnected.

Two hours later, her attorney called.

Vanessa wanted a deal.

And she wanted protection from Michael.
