CHAPTER 10 – THE WOMAN WHO WHISPERED SOPHIA'S NAME

Vanessa survived surgery.

The doctors found a small silver key hidden beneath the lining of her coat.

It was stamped with three words.

Locker 314.

St. Gabriel's Children's Hospital.

Thomas ran facial recognition against every surviving photograph of Richard Caldwell's family.

The result changed the investigation.

Vanessa Cole was almost certainly Anna Caldwell.

Richard's missing daughter.

Alive after twenty-eight years.

While unconscious, Anna whispered fragments of memory.

"They lied."

"The Ashfords."

"Blackwood."

"Sophia never left the manor."

"They buried the truth."

Her heart monitor suddenly accelerated.

Doctors forced everyone from the room.

She survived the crisis, but remained unconscious.

Emily opened Sophia's silver locket again.

A thin strip of paper had been hidden beneath the photograph.

It contained an address for St. Gabriel's Hospital basement archive.

At the same time, detectives searched Anna's apartment.

They found forged passports, surveillance photographs, and files on every member of the Ashford family.

Inside a locked drawer lay a sealed birth certificate.

Thomas brought it to the manor before dawn.

The certificate named the child:

Sophia Ashford.

Current Legal Name:

Emily Sarah Bennett.

Emily read it without speaking.

Daniel looked at the seal.

It appeared genuine.

If the certificate was real, Emily had never been Emily Ashford.

May you like

She had been Sophia all along.

And somewhere beyond the reach of every official record, the real Emily Ashford might still be alive.
