CHAPTER 15 – THE SISTER WHO NEVER DIED

CHAPTER 15 – THE SISTER WHO NEVER DIED

The masked man collapsed onto the cold concrete floor.

Blood spread beneath his shoulder.

Daniel immediately knelt beside him.

"Call an ambulance!"

The security chief pressed a bandage against the wound.

"Stay with us."

The man smiled weakly.

"They'll never let me leave alive."

Emily crouched beside him.

"You said my sister is alive."

His eyes met hers.

"I did."

"Then tell me where she is."

He coughed painfully.

"First, you need to know who I am."

Daniel removed the man's tactical mask completely.

His face was weathered.

Around sixty years old.

A faded scar crossed his jaw.

Evelyn Blackwood looked at him with visible shock.

"Ian..."

The man managed a faint smile.

"So, you survived too."

Daniel looked between them.

"You know each other?"

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"He was one of Blackwood's original investigators."

"Before Victor Holloway took control."

Ian closed his eyes.

"We tried to stop him."

"We failed."

Emily took another step forward.

"You said my sister survived."

Ian nodded.

"Yes."

"But she never knew who she was."

Daniel frowned.

"Memory loss?"

Ian shook his head.

"No."

"A manufactured identity."

"They raised her under another name."

Emily felt her heartbeat quicken.

"So she's alive and believes she's someone else."

Ian whispered,

"Exactly."

Daniel suddenly remembered something.

"The fourth bracelet."

Ian slowly opened his eyes.

"You saw the tape."

Daniel nodded.

"There were four girls."

Ian gave a weak smile.

"Four children."

"Four new identities."

"Only one remained hidden from everyone."

Emily looked confused.

"I thought the fourth child wasn't an Ashford."

Ian answered carefully.

"She wasn't."

"But she became the key."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Ian."

"Tell them everything."

He laughed bitterly.

"I don't have enough time."

His breathing had become shallow.

"But I can give them one truth."

He reached into his jacket.

The security guards immediately tensed.

Instead of a weapon, he removed a faded photograph.

Its edges had yellowed with age.

Emily accepted it carefully.

The picture showed four little girls sitting together in a hospital garden.

Daniel immediately recognized three faces.

Emily.

Anna.

Another girl identical to Emily.

The fourth child had her face scratched away.

Across the back of the photograph someone had written:

The four promises.

Ian pointed toward the writing.

"Turn it over."

Emily did.

Each child's position had been labeled.

Sophia.

Emily.

Anna.

The fourth line contained only one word.

Guardian.

Daniel frowned.

"Guardian?"

Ian nodded.

"She wasn't hidden because she was important."

"She was hidden because she remembered everything."

Silence filled the archive.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"So Victor never found her."

Ian slowly shook his head.

"He searched."

"For thirty years."

"He never realized she was standing beside him."

Daniel looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Ian stared directly at Emily.

"The Guardian worked inside Blackwood."

Emily's eyes widened.

"Who?"

Ian whispered one name.

"Anna."

The room froze.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"But Anna said she was forced."

Evelyn nodded.

"She was."

Ian continued.

"Victor believed Anna's memories had been erased."

"They hadn't."

"She remembered everything."

"For decades, she secretly protected the surviving children."

Emily suddenly understood.

"The necklace."

"The CCTV."

"The planted evidence."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

Emily's thoughts raced.

"If Anna wanted to expose Blackwood, she needed me inside this investigation."

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"Exactly."

"The framing wasn't meant to destroy you."

"It was designed to bring Daniel to you."

Daniel stood speechless.

Everything from the first day suddenly made sense.

Anna had never tried to escape after the CCTV.

She had wanted to be caught.

The security chief's radio crackled.

"Sir."

"We've intercepted a vehicle leaving the hospital."

Daniel turned.

"Who's inside?"

"One female."

"Elderly."

Silver hair.

Everyone looked toward Evelyn.

She was gone.

Only the flash drive remained on the table.

Daniel rushed into the hallway.

The corridor was empty.

She had disappeared without anyone seeing her leave.

Ian smiled faintly.

"She always was the smartest one."

Emily looked back at him.

"Where do I find my sister?"

Ian struggled to breathe.

"There is one final safe house."

He pulled a small brass compass from around his neck.

The glass was cracked.

Inside the lid, a tiny strip of paper had been hidden beneath the needle.

Daniel carefully unfolded it.

Only an address appeared.

Whispering Pines Children's Home.

Lake Evergreen.

Emily had never heard of it.

But Ian smiled.

"You have."

Emily frowned.

"What?"

He whispered,

"You lived there for six months."

Suddenly, fragments of memory flashed through Emily's mind.

A wooden dock.

A little girl laughing.

A woman reading bedtime stories.

A white rabbit stuffed toy.

She grabbed her head.

"I remember..."

Daniel steadied her.

"What do you see?"

Emily looked at him in shock.

"I wasn't alone."

"There was another little girl."

"She called me Sophie."

Tears filled her eyes.

"And I called her..."

Emily stopped speaking.

Her face turned pale.

Daniel gently squeezed her shoulder.

"What did you call her?"

Emily whispered one trembling word.

"Emma."

Ian's eyes slowly closed.

A peaceful smile crossed his face.

"Good..."

"You finally remembered."

His hand loosened.

The brass compass slipped onto the floor.

The heart monitor attached by the paramedics gave one long, continuous tone.

Ian Carter, the last original Blackwood investigator, was gone.

Silence settled over the archive.

Then the security chief's radio crackled once more.

His expression changed instantly.

"Sir..."

Daniel looked up.

"What now?"

"The flash drive Evelyn left behind..."

"Our analyst just accessed it."

"And?"

The chief swallowed.

"It contains recent surveillance footage."

Emily's pulse quickened.

"Of who?"

The chief slowly turned the tablet toward her.

The video had been recorded only forty-eight hours earlier.

A young woman stood on the porch of a lakeside cottage, smiling as she watered flowers.

She looked almost exactly like Emily.

The file name beneath the video read:

SUBJECT EMMA ASHFORD.

STATUS: ALIVE.

LOCATION: ACTIVE.

Emily stared at the screen.

Her sister wasn't a mystery anymore.

She had a face.

May you like

A name.

And someone was already watching her.
