Chapter 4 - The RecognitionArthur looked from the screen to the street, and then back to the screen.

His brain struggled to bridge the impossible gap. For three months, he had operated under the absolute certainty that I was locked away in a private psychiatric facility in the Swiss Alps, pumped full of sedatives and completely erased from public consciousness. His legal team had even produced a signed, notarized declaration of incapacity bearing a crude imitation of my signature.

Yet here I was. Alive. Breathing. Standing outside my own hotel, looking at him with the cold, unblinking eyes of an executioner.

"Security!" Arthur screamed, his voice cracking, losing all its polished corporate authority. "Seize her! Drag her out of my sight! Arrest that impostor!"

None of the guards moved.

They couldn't. Because at that exact second, every smartphone in the lobby buzzed simultaneously with a high-priority push notification sent directly from the New York State Department of State Corporations Division.

Notice of Executive Reassignment: Solmere Corporation ownership rights have been officially restored to primary heir Charlotte Vale pursuant to Section 14, Paragraph C. All executive powers held by Arthur Sterling are hereby revoked effective immediately.

The Japanese investor Arthur had been talking to slowly stepped back, adjusting his tie with a look of profound disgust. "Mr. Sterling," he said coldly, his voice cutting through the quiet room like a knife. "It appears your company is facing severe legal and criminal liabilities. Our partnership is terminated."

"Wait! Mr. Sato, please! It's a cyberattack! It's a forgery!" Arthur lunged forward, his manicured hands grasping at thin air as the investor turned and walked briskly toward the exit.

Victoria rushed over from the lounge area, her silk gown rustling frantically, her face pale under layers of heavy makeup. "Uncle Arthur! What is happening? Who did this? Why is everyone staring at me?!"

"Shut up, you absolute fool!" Arthur hissed, grabbing her wrist so hard she winced. "That girl you dragged across the floor... that wasn't a beggar."

Victoria froze, her blue eyes widening in sudden, horrifying realization. "No... no, that's impossible. She was wearing a ten-dollar tank top! She looked like trash!"

"She is Charlotte Vale," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer terror.

Slowly, the heavy revolving doors of the Solmere Hotel pushed open.

I walked inside.

The crowd parted before me instantly, whispering voices rippling through the room like wind through tall grass. Nobody touched me. Nobody dared to look me in the eye. The very marble floor that had scraped my hands raw moments ago now felt like a royal carpet beneath my boots.

I walked straight past the concierge desk, past the shattered champagne glasses, and stopped three feet away from Arthur and Victoria.

"Welcome home, Charlotte," Arthur forced a trembling, oily smile onto his face, desperately trying to salvage a shred of dignity. "There... there has been a terrible misunderstanding. Your uncle and I, we were just holding things together while you were... recovering. We missed you so much."

I tilted my head, looking at the man who had stolen my mother's legacy, locked away my freedom, and treated me like an animal.

"Did you miss me, Arthur?" I asked softly. "Or did you just miss spending my money?"
