Chapter 12 - The Choice Logan Made

Everything happened in seconds.

Marina jumped behind the concrete barrier.

Harrison’s SUV struck the side rail.

Metal screamed.

Vanessa stumbled.

Noah slipped from her arms.

Logan was already running.

He ignored every officer shouting his name.

He reached Noah first.

The boy fell against Logan’s chest.

“Daddy.”

“I’ve got you.”

Logan carried him away from the roadway.

Vanessa ran toward the trees.

Two officers followed.

Harrison climbed from the damaged SUV.

He raised his hands.

“Don’t shoot.”

Nobody fired.

Rachel ordered him to the ground.

Harrison obeyed.

Marina emerged from behind the barrier.

Noah saw her.

“Mommy.”

Logan looked at Marina.

For the first time he did not question the word.

He walked toward her.

Marina wrapped her arms around Noah.

Logan kept one hand against his son’s back.

For several seconds, the three of them stood together beneath the rain.

Not husband.

Not wife.

Not yet.

Just parents holding a frightened little boy.

Vanessa was captured twenty minutes later near an abandoned fishing shed.

She remained silent.

Harrison did not.

By sunrise, he had requested an attorney.

By noon, he requested a deal.

He told investigators Vanessa had begun targeting Elena months before the bridge.

She wanted Logan.

But it was not only love.

Mercer Holdings was preparing to restructure its family trust.

If Logan remarried and had another child, Vanessa expected access to a fortune.

Elena stood in the way.

So did Noah.

Harrison admitted altering evidence.

He admitted helping conceal Elena in the Mercer House basement for two days.

He admitted transporting her after the crash.

But one detail confused everyone.

“I didn’t leave her at the hospital.”

Harrison told investigators.

Rachel leaned forward.

“Then who did?”

Harrison shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“I gave her to someone else.”

“Who?”

Harrison swallowed.

“I was told he could make her disappear.”

Logan watched through the interview room glass.

Marina stood beside him.

Rachel asked the question again.

“Who ordered you to give Elena to this person?”

Harrison hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Someone from the Mercer family.”

Logan’s blood turned cold.

There were only four Mercers with enough influence to make that order.

His father was dead.

His mother lived overseas.

His younger sister had been nineteen.

And his older brother Adrian had managed the family company while Logan searched for Elena.

Marina looked at him.

“Logan.”

May you like

He already knew what she was thinking.

Vanessa had not acted alone.
