Chapter 4 - The Letter Elena Left Behind

Maya didn’t scream.

Arthur almost wished she had.

A scream would have been easier to understand than the way she simply sat down and stared at Daniel Mercer.

Noah woke when he heard voices.

He came into the kitchen rubbing his eyes.

“What’s happening?”

Maya immediately stood.

“Nothing. Go back to sleep.”

Daniel looked at Arthur.

Arthur understood.

Not in front of him.

But Noah was smarter than adults gave him credit for.

He looked from Maya to the sealed envelope.

“Is it about Mom?”

Nobody answered.

Noah’s face tightened.

“I’m not a baby.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Arthur pulled out a chair.

“Sit with us.”

Noah sat.

Daniel remained standing.

“My name is Daniel Mercer. I was your grandfather’s attorney for almost fifteen years. Later, I represented your mother privately.”

“Why privately?” Arthur asked.

“Because Elena believed people inside Whitmore Holdings were stealing from the family.”

“Charles Vale.”

Daniel nodded.

“Among others.”

He slid the envelope toward Maya.

“This belongs to you.”

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside were eight handwritten pages.

She recognized the first line.

My sweet Maya,

If you are reading this, something has happened that I prayed I could prevent.

Maya covered her mouth.

Arthur looked away.

This was not his letter.

But Maya pushed it toward him.

“Read it.”

Arthur hesitated.

“Please.”

He began.

Elena wrote that Edmund Whitmore had discovered a financial scheme six months before his death.

Money had been siphoned from several holding companies.

Shell corporations had been created.

Property had been transferred.

Signatures had been forged.

Charles Vale had been at the center of it.

But he had not acted alone.

Edmund planned to remove him from every position and notify federal investigators.

Two days before the meeting, Edmund suffered what doctors called a fatal cardiac event.

Elena didn’t believe it.

After Edmund’s death, Charles produced documents giving him temporary control over several Whitmore entities.

Then he began pressuring Elena to sign a family settlement.

She refused.

That was when the threats started.

The final page contained one sentence underlined twice.

If I die, find Daniel Mercer. Do not trust Charles Vale. Do not trust his daughter Victoria.

Arthur stopped reading.

The kitchen became deathly quiet.

Victoria.

Maya looked at him.

Arthur felt something inside him collapse.

He thought of Victoria standing at the altar six years earlier.

Victoria laughing beside him in Italy.

Victoria holding his hand at his mother’s funeral.

Victoria telling him she wanted children someday.

Had any of it been real?

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Elena contacted me after she found evidence that Charles had arranged fraudulent transfers.”

“What evidence?” Arthur asked.

“A ledger.”

“What kind?”

“A physical ledger kept by Edmund.”

“Why physical?”

“Because Edmund was old-fashioned and paranoid.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Turns out he had reason to be.”

“Where is it?”

“That’s the problem.”

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Elena hid it.”

Maya shook her head.

“She never told me where.”

“She left a clue.”

Daniel removed a photograph.

It showed Elena with Maya and Noah beside a lake.

On the back were six handwritten words.

Where the first promise was made.

Maya stared.

“I don’t know what that means.”

Daniel did.

Arthur could tell.

“Where?”

Daniel looked toward the windows.

“Not here.”

Arthur frowned.

“Why?”

Daniel glanced at his phone.

“Because if Victoria left here an hour ago, Charles already knows these children are with you.”

Arthur’s stomach dropped.

“He wouldn’t—”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Mr. Cole, Charles Vale has spent eighteen months hiding the lawful heirs to a fortune worth almost nine hundred million dollars.”

Arthur went still.

“What?”

Maya stared at Daniel.

“Nine hundred million?”

“Potentially more.”

Noah whispered, “That’s ours?”

“Not exactly. Much of it is held in trusts, foundations, and operating companies. But yes. Your grandfather structured control to pass through Elena, then to you both.”

Arthur finally understood.

Victoria hadn’t been angry that strangers were in her house.

She had been terrified that two missing heirs had landed in the home of her husband.

“You said Charles hid them.”

Daniel nodded.

“After Elena died, Charles claimed the children were traumatized and needed privacy. He used sealed guardianship proceedings and cooperative professionals to keep them out of sight.”

Maya looked sick.

“He told us no one wanted us.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“That was a lie.”

“Then why didn’t you find us?”

“I tried.”

His voice broke slightly.

“I’ve been trying for eighteen months.”

Maya looked down.

Daniel continued.

“Three weeks ago, I learned you had escaped.”

Arthur looked at Maya.

“You escaped three weeks ago?”

She nodded.

“We hid wherever we could.”

“How?”

Noah answered.

“There was a delivery truck.”

Maya gave him a warning look.

He shrugged.

Arthur rubbed both hands over his face.

This was bigger than he understood.

A vibration sounded.

Daniel’s phone.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?”

Daniel turned toward Arthur.

“How many security cameras do you have outside?”

“Four.”

“Check them.”

Arthur opened the feed.

A black SUV had stopped across the street.

Then another.

Headlights off.

Engines running.

Daniel grabbed the envelope.

“We need to leave.”

Arthur stared at the screen.

Two men exited the first SUV.

One of them walked toward the house.

No hurry.

No disguise.

No fear.

Arthur said, “I’m calling the police.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Call them. But we’re not waiting.”

The doorbell rang.

Noah grabbed Maya.

Arthur’s phone buzzed.

A text message.

From Victoria.

He opened it.

PLEASE DON’T MAKE THIS WORSE. GIVE THEM TO MY FATHER.

Arthur stared at the words.

Then another message appeared.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE WILL DO.

The doorbell rang again.

A man’s voice came through the door.

“Mr. Cole, we’re here for the children.”

Arthur looked at Maya.

She was trembling.

He looked at Noah.

Then at Daniel.

Something inside him settled.

Fear disappeared.

In its place came rage.

Arthur walked toward the front door.

May you like

But he wasn’t planning to open it.

He was planning to make sure nobody ever took those children again.
