Chapter 7 - The Selected Wife
Margaret did not deny ordering the background reports.
“Elena had potential.”
Maria stood beside the gala table.
“You mean she knew where the money went.”
Margaret ignored her.
She explained that Elena’s original audit created legal risk.
If Elena sued, the employee fund’s ownership structure could become public.
If the family hired her, promoted her and eventually brought her into the Bellmont name, her claim could be absorbed through internal settlement.
Richard’s marriage solved several problems.
Elena’s silence could be described as loyalty.
Her signature could be presented as family approval.
Her future objections could be dismissed as marital conflict.
Margaret had turned social acceptance into a containment strategy.
Elena was allowed into old-money rooms because the family believed marriage would make her evidence belong to them.
Richard looked at his mother.
“You arranged our first meeting?”
“I created an opportunity.”
“You investigated her before I knew her name.”
“She was a threat.”
The answer struck Elena differently when Naomi played it inside the sedan.
Richard had lied.
Controlled her.
Cornered her.
But part of him had also been placed inside a plan designed by his mother.
That did not excuse him.
It revealed how willingly he continued after learning the truth.
The employee council held an emergency vote.
Margaret was removed from the foundation.
Richard lost his family proxy.
Neither could authorize spending, hiring or property sales.
Permanent oversight transferred to elected representatives from hotel workers, retirees and surviving family members.
Maria received the first seat.
A retired engineer received the second.
A widowed housekeeper received the third.
An independent fiduciary received the fourth.
Elena was offered the fifth.
She declined.
“I will testify.”
“I will return what I received.”
“But the people whose paychecks built the fund should control it.”
The council selected a hotel nurse whose medical program had been underfunded for years.
The reversal was complete.
The servers were no longer standing behind the tables.
They were voting at them.
Then Naomi received an alert.
Someone had opened a second reserve account during the confusion.
