Chapter 15 - A New Dawn on Long Island-15

Three months had passed since the bloody reckoning in the grand chapel.
Autumn had long since yielded to the biting, crystalline frost of a harsh Long Island winter, and now the first warm, golden rays of a brilliant spring morning were beginning to melt the remaining snow across the sprawling lawns of the Rinaldi estate.
Inside the grand library, the air smelled faintly of fresh coffee, burning cedarwood, and lavender oil.
Massimo Rinaldi stood tall and unassisted by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing his immaculate black tailored vest, looking out over the manicured hedges where green buds were finally beginning to break through the frozen soil. The physical therapy sessions had been grueling, pushing his body to absolute limits, but his legs were fully recovered. The Rinaldi empire had been completely purged of every traitor, corrupt associate, and opportunistic vulture. The syndicate was stronger, leaner, and more secure than it had ever been in its three-generation history.
Behind him, soft, rapid pattering footsteps echoed across the polished marble floor.
Nina came running into the library, holding a small wooden watering can in her hands, her curly brown hair bouncing around her bright, smiling face.
"Uncle Massimo! The flowers in the garden are waking up!" she announced excitedly, grabbing the edge of his trousers and tugging insistently. "You promised to run with me today!"
Massimo turned around, a wide, genuine smile breaking across his sharp features. He didn't look like the cold, feared mafia boss who ruled the East Coast with an iron fist anymore; he looked like a proud, protective father.
"Did I make that promise?" Massimo chuckled deeply, bending down to scoop the little girl up into his arms and hoisting her effortlessly onto his shoulders. Nina squealed with delight, clutching his hair to keep her balance.
Carla Bennett walked into the library just then, carrying a fresh tray of coffee and pastries. She wore a neat, elegant dress, and her face glowed with a peaceful, hard-earned happiness. She had been promoted to estate director of operations, overseeing the entire household with absolute respect from every staff member and capo who stepped foot inside the gates.
"Careful, Nina, don't pull his hair too hard," Carla scolded gently, though a warm smile played across her lips.

"Let her be, Carla," Massimo said, his gray eyes shining with contentment as he walked toward the double doors leading out into the sunlit gardens. "Today, we celebrate new beginnings."
As the heavy oak doors swung open wide, flooding the grand library with bright spring sunlight, the dark shadows of the past were left far behind. The Rinaldi empire had survived its darkest hour—not because of armies, or weapons, or millions of dollars, but because of a three-year-old housekeeper's daughter who believed in magic, remembered a tiny white pill, and taught a fallen king how to walk again.
