Chapter 9 – The Engagement Cracks

Chapter 9 – The Engagement Cracks

By Monday morning, rumors had begun spreading through Manhattan's elite circles.

No newspaper had published a single article.

No television network had broken the story.

Yet somehow everyone seemed to know.

The Caldwell wedding had been postponed.

Some whispered that Ethan had discovered Victoria's affair.

Others claimed the billionaire had suffered a nervous breakdown.

The boldest rumor of all was almost too unbelievable to repeat.

He had a secret daughter.

No one knew the child's name.

No one knew where she lived.

But speculation traveled faster than truth.

And truth, Ethan had learned, was rarely invited into rooms where powerful people preferred comfortable lies.

At Caldwell Holdings, the atmosphere was unusually tense.

Employees lowered their voices whenever Ethan walked past.

Meetings ended early.

Conversations stopped when elevators opened.

Even those who had worked beside him for years sensed something had changed.

Not his authority.

His priorities.

At ten o'clock sharp, the executive board gathered for their weekly strategy meeting.

Charts filled the giant screens.

Quarterly earnings.

International acquisitions.

Market forecasts.

Normally, Ethan would have spoken first.

Instead, he remained silent.

Finally, the Chief Financial Officer cleared his throat.

"Mr. Caldwell?"

Ethan looked up.

"I'm listening."

"We're waiting."

"For what?"

"The acquisition in Singapore."

Ethan glanced at the presentation.

Then quietly closed his laptop.

"We'll postpone it."

The room fell silent.

One board member frowned.

"Postpone?"

"Yes."

"The opportunity may disappear."

Ethan nodded.

"So be it."

Another executive spoke carefully.

"With respect..."

"Go ahead."

"You've never delayed an acquisition because of personal matters."

Ethan's answer surprised everyone.

"I have personal matters now."

Three blocks away, Victoria Haynes stepped out of a black SUV wearing oversized sunglasses.

She ignored the curious glances of reporters gathered outside the luxury bridal boutique.

Only three weeks earlier, photographers had celebrated her final wedding dress fitting.

Today they smelled scandal.

"Miss Haynes!"

"Is the wedding canceled?"

"Have you and Mr. Caldwell separated?"

"Is there another woman?"

Victoria kept walking.

The cameras flashed relentlessly.

She smiled the same polished smile she had practiced since childhood.

One reporter shouted louder than the rest.

"What about the child?"

For the first time...

Victoria stopped walking.

Slowly, she turned.

"What child?"

The reporter held up a phone.

"Sources claim Mr. Caldwell recently learned he has a three-year-old daughter."

The world seemed to tilt beneath Victoria's feet.

How?

Only a handful of people knew.

Someone had talked.

Without another word, she entered the boutique, the glass doors closing behind her.

But the damage had already been done.

Inside, rows of white wedding gowns shimmered beneath crystal chandeliers.

The boutique owner greeted her warmly.

"Victoria! Your final alterations are almost—"

"I won't need them."

The older woman blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

"The wedding isn't happening."

Silence.

Even the seamstresses stopped working.

Victoria looked toward the gown hanging alone in the center of the room.

Hand-stitched lace.

French silk.

Six months of design.

It suddenly looked like a costume for a life that no longer existed.

"Would you like to cancel?"

Victoria stared at the dress.

"No."

The boutique owner hesitated.

"You still want it?"

Victoria's lips curved into a strange smile.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because one way or another..."

Her voice dropped almost to a whisper.

"...I'm going to wear it."

That afternoon, Ethan arrived at Lily's daycare earlier than usual.

Rosa looked surprised to see him waiting outside.

"You finished work already?"

"I left."

She studied him.

"You never leave work early."

"I do now."

Lily burst through the classroom door moments later.

"Daddy!"

The word came naturally this time.

Without hesitation.

Without confusion.

Without anyone correcting her.

Every parent nearby turned to look.

Ethan froze.

His heart pounded so loudly he barely heard anything else.

"Daddy!"

Lily ran straight into his arms.

He caught her instinctively.

She wrapped both tiny arms around his neck.

"I painted a butterfly!"

He held her carefully.

"You did?"

She nodded enthusiastically.

"It's purple."

"Purple butterflies are the prettiest."

"I know."

She smiled proudly.

Rosa watched quietly.

She had expected awkwardness.

Distance.

Uncertainty.

Instead, it looked as though Lily had simply accepted Ethan into her world because children often trusted what adults complicated.

A small voice inside Rosa warned her to be careful.

Another whispered that perhaps Lily deserved this happiness.

Across the street, someone lifted a camera.

Click.

Click.

Click.

A telephoto lens captured every moment.

Lily hugging Ethan.

Ethan smiling.

Rosa standing beside them.

Within minutes, the photographs were sent anonymously to three entertainment websites.

By evening, the internet exploded.

Billionaire's Secret Child?

Wedding in Trouble After Family Scandal

Most articles relied on unnamed sources.

None mentioned Rosa by name.

Lily's face was blurred.

But Ethan was unmistakable.

So was the affection in his eyes.

Daniel Harper rushed into Ethan's office carrying a tablet.

"You need to see this."

Ethan scanned the headlines.

His expression remained surprisingly calm.

"They found us."

"Someone leaked it."

"I know."

Daniel looked worried.

"This could become ugly."

"It already is."

"What do you want to do?"

Ethan set the tablet aside.

"Nothing."

Daniel blinked.

"Nothing?"

"I'm done hiding."

The next morning, reporters surrounded Caldwell Holdings.

Microphones stretched toward Ethan as he stepped from his car.

"Mr. Caldwell!"

"Is the child yours?"

"Are you ending your engagement?"

"Who is the mother?"

Security moved quickly.

But Ethan raised one hand.

The guards stepped back.

For the first time in his career...

He addressed the media without a prepared statement.

"Yes."

The crowd fell silent.

"I recently learned that I have a daughter."

Cameras flashed continuously.

"I intend to be part of her life."

Another wave of questions erupted.

Ethan continued.

"I will not discuss her identity."

Nor her mother's."

"They deserve privacy."

A reporter shouted,

"What about your engagement?"

Ethan looked directly into the cameras.

"My engagement has ended."

The words traveled across every news station in America within minutes.

At her penthouse, Victoria watched the live broadcast in complete silence.

Her phone rang endlessly.

Friends.

Family.

Wedding planners.

Magazine editors.

She ignored every call.

When Ethan finished speaking, she replayed the clip.

Again.

And again.

She wasn't watching the announcement.

She was studying his face.

He looked peaceful.

She realized something terrifying.

He wasn't choosing responsibility because he had to.

He was choosing it because he wanted to.

That meant he would never come back.

Late that afternoon, Victoria visited Caldwell Estate one final time.

Most of her belongings had already been packed.

The engagement photographs had been removed from the walls.

Only one room remained untouched.

The east parlor.

The piano stood exactly where it always had.

Sunlight poured across the polished black surface.

Victoria walked slowly toward it.

She reached out.

Placed one hand on the lid.

Then remembered another pair of tiny hands touching the same piano.

A moment later...

She slammed the lid shut with all her strength.

The violent sound echoed through the empty mansion.

"Why?"

She whispered.

No one answered.

Upstairs, Ethan heard the noise.

He entered the parlor quietly.

Victoria didn't turn around.

"I wanted to say goodbye."

He nodded.

"I thought so."

She laughed bitterly.

"I've spent months planning our wedding."

"I know."

"I memorized flower arrangements."

Silence.

"I chose china."

Another pause.

"I imagined our children."

Ethan lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

She turned to face him.

"For what?"

"For hurting you."

Victoria smiled sadly.

"No."

She shook her head.

"You didn't hurt me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You replaced me."

Ethan didn't argue.

Because from her perspective...

That was exactly how it felt.

She reached into her purse.

Removed the engagement ring.

The enormous diamond sparkled beneath the afternoon light.

For several seconds, she simply stared at it.

Then she placed it gently on top of the piano.

"It never belonged to me."

Ethan looked at the ring.

Then at Victoria.

"I hope someday..."

She paused, struggling to steady her voice.

"...you understand what you've thrown away."

He answered quietly.

"I already do."

She smiled faintly.

"No."

"You don't."

With that, Victoria walked toward the door.

Just before leaving, she stopped.

Without turning around, she asked one final question.

"Does she love you?"

Ethan thought of Lily.

Her tiny hand slipping into his.

Her offering him Button the rabbit.

Her calling him "Daddy."

His answer came softly.

"I think..."

A smile touched his face.

"...she's giving me the chance to earn it."

Victoria closed her eyes.

Then she walked away.

The front door shut behind her.

The engagement was over.

The future she had spent years building had collapsed.

But as she drove away from Caldwell Estate, one thought refused to leave her mind.

If she couldn't be Ethan Caldwell's wife...

She would make absolutely certain...

No one else ever became Mrs. Caldwell either.

Far across the city, completely unaware of the storm gathering around her, Lily sat at her tiny kitchen table helping Rosa frost homemade cupcakes.

She carefully licked icing from one finger and smiled.

"Mama?"

"Yes?"

"When Daddy comes tomorrow..."

She held up a cupcake with far too many sprinkles.

"...can I make one just for him?"

Rosa looked at her daughter.

Then toward the fading evening sky outside the apartment window.

A strange feeling settled in her chest.

As if happiness had arrived...

May you like

Just before something terrible.
