CHAPTER 9: The Truth About Ethan's Father

CHAPTER 9: The Truth About Ethan's Father

Sometimes the greatest lie is not what happened.

It is why it happened.

For twenty-two years, Ethan Whitmore believed his father had died from a tragic heart attack brought on by stress.

The official reports said so.

The newspapers repeated it.

Friends offered their condolences.

Life moved on.

Only Eleanor had never truly accepted the explanation.

Now, she was about to learn that Michael Whitmore's final days had been carefully erased from history.

The drive from St. Andrew's Chapel to Whitmore Manor felt endless.

Police sirens echoed through the streets as Ethan, Eleanor, Detective Laura Bennett, and Samuel Brooks raced toward the estate.

No one spoke.

Victor's final words lingered in everyone's mind.

"You finally caught the wrong man."

When they arrived, the front gates stood open.

Several police cruisers blocked the driveway.

Officers searched every corner of the property.

The mansion itself was untouched.

No broken windows.

No signs of forced entry.

It looked perfectly normal.

That was what frightened Laura the most.

Professional criminals rarely left chaos behind.

Martha hurried out the front door the moment she saw Eleanor.

"Mrs. Whitmore!"

Eleanor rushed toward her.

"What happened?"

"A gentleman arrived about twenty minutes ago."

"Who?"

"He introduced himself as your husband's old attorney."

Eleanor frowned.

"We haven't worked with Michael's attorney in decades."

"I know."

Martha swallowed nervously.

"But he knew details no stranger should know."

"Where is he now?"

"He left."

"What did he want?"

Martha hesitated before handing Eleanor a thick cream-colored envelope.

"He said this belonged to you."

Inside the envelope was a single leather-bound journal.

The cover was worn with age.

Gold letters had almost faded away.

M. Whitmore

Eleanor's hands began to tremble.

She recognized it immediately.

Michael's private journal.

The one she believed had disappeared after his death.

"He kept notes every night."

She whispered.

"I searched for this for years."

Everyone gathered in Michael's old study.

Laura carefully photographed every page before Eleanor began reading.

The first entries were ordinary.

Business meetings.

Family vacations.

Memories of Ethan as a little boy.

Then the tone changed.

One entry, dated exactly three weeks before Michael's death, caught everyone's attention.

March 14

Victor is becoming desperate.

He knows we're getting close.

Henry Dawson finally agreed to testify.

If anything happens to either of us, Eleanor must never believe it was random.

Claire, sitting quietly in the corner, covered her mouth.

"My father..."

She whispered.

"He really was helping him."

Samuel nodded silently.

Another entry followed.

March 19

I met someone today.

He called himself only "The Chairman."

I never saw his face.

But I recognized his voice.

Laura looked up immediately.

"He recognized him?"

Eleanor continued reading.

He spoke like an old friend.

He knew details from my childhood.

Things only a handful of people could possibly know.

Someone close to us has been feeding him information for years.

Ethan frowned.

"So there really was a traitor."

Samuel nodded.

"We suspected one."

"Michael confirmed it."

The next page had been partially torn.

Only a few sentences remained.

If Eleanor ever reads this...

Trust Martha.

Trust Samuel.

But do not trust...

The rest of the page had been ripped away.

The room fell silent.

Someone had deliberately removed the name.

Laura carefully examined the torn edge.

"It wasn't damaged over time."

She said.

"It was removed with a blade."

Eleanor slowly closed the journal.

"For twenty-two years..."

"I thought Michael left us without answers."

She looked around the room.

"He spent his final days trying to protect us."

Meanwhile, Victor Kane sat calmly inside the police interrogation room.

His hands were cuffed.

Yet he appeared completely relaxed.

Detective Bennett entered carrying Michael's journal.

"You've been hiding for a long time."

Victor smiled.

"I wasn't hiding."

"I was waiting."

Laura placed the journal on the table.

"Michael knew about the Chairman."

"So?"

"He said he recognized his voice."

Victor chuckled.

"Michael was smarter than most people."

"Smart enough to die."

Laura leaned forward.

"Who is the Chairman?"

Victor remained silent.

Then quietly replied,

"You've already met him."

Laura's eyes narrowed.

"When?"

Victor smiled.

"Many times."

Back at Whitmore Manor, Ethan couldn't stop thinking about the missing page.

Someone had removed a single name.

One person Michael had specifically warned Eleanor not to trust.

He walked through the mansion, replaying childhood memories.

Birthday parties.

Christmas mornings.

Family dinners.

One face appeared again and again.

Always nearby.

Always smiling.

Always welcome.

Could it really be someone they had known all along?

His thoughts were interrupted by Martha.

"Mr. Ethan."

"I found something."

She led him into the attic.

Behind several old boxes stood a locked wooden trunk.

"The movers never touched this after your father's death."

Samuel examined the lock.

"It's Michael's."

He entered a simple four-digit code.

    The trunk clicked open.

Inside were dozens of old photographs.

    Letters.

    Cassette tapes.

    And one sealed envelope labeled:

For Ethan. Open only when you know the truth.

    Ethan hesitated.

    Then slowly broke the seal.

    Inside was a handwritten letter.

    His father's handwriting was unmistakable.

    My son,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect our family.

I pray you never have to carry the burden I carried.

But if the truth has finally reached you...

There is something you deserve to know.

Ethan's breathing slowed as he continued reading.

I was not an innocent man.

    The words struck like lightning.

Years before I met your mother, I accepted investments from people I did not fully understand.

I believed they were ambitious businessmen.

I ignored the warning signs because the company was growing.

By the time I learned who they truly were...

    It was already too late.

    Eleanor closed her eyes.

Michael had never told her this.

    The letter continued.

Every mistake I made gave Victor Kane and the Chairman a doorway into our lives.

Henry Dawson tried to help me close it.

    He paid with his life.

    If you blame anyone...

    Blame me first.

A tear rolled down Ethan's face.

His father had not been corrupt.

But he had made one catastrophic decision.

One moment of ambition that allowed dangerous people into the company.

And he had spent the rest of his life trying to undo the damage.

At the bottom of the letter, one final paragraph remained.

    Ethan...

If the Chairman is still alive...

    Remember one thing.

He never destroys families from the outside.

He convinces someone inside the family to open the door.

    The room became eerily quiet.

    Then...

The mansion's security alarm suddenly activated.

Every light inside the house flashed red.

A computerized voice echoed through every hallway.

    "Unauthorized access detected."

Detective Bennett immediately reached for her radio.

    "All units, secure every exit!"

Footsteps thundered through the first floor.

    An officer shouted from below.

    "Someone's inside the study!"

Ethan grabbed the letter and ran downstairs with Eleanor close behind.

When they reached Michael's study, the window stood open.

The curtains swayed in the night wind.

    The room was empty.

Except for one object resting neatly on Michael's desk.

    A black chess king.

Beneath it lay a folded note.

Eleanor unfolded the paper with trembling hands.

Only one sentence had been written in elegant handwriting.

"The game your husband started is finally reaching its end."
