CHAPTER 8: The Wedding That Never Happened

CHAPTER 8: The Wedding That Never Happened
Some weddings end with vows.
Others end with silence.
And a few...
End before anyone reaches the altar.
The morning after the attack on Claire's apartment, every television station carried a new headline.
GUNFIRE ERUPTS AT FIANCÉE'S HOME
The story spread even faster than the gala incident.
Speculation filled every news channel.
Some claimed Claire had been targeted because of Eleanor.
Others insisted Ethan's family had powerful enemies.
No one knew the truth.
Not yet.
Inside Whitmore Manor, the atmosphere had changed.
For the first time since the gala, Ethan, Eleanor, Detective Laura Bennett, and Samuel Brooks sat together around the same table.
Not as strangers.
As allies.
The investigation had become larger than any of them imagined.
Claire sat quietly at the far end of the room.
She had agreed to cooperate.
But trust was still fragile.
Laura placed the tiny microfilm capsule on the table.
"Our lab finally developed it."
Everyone leaned forward.
"What did you find?"
Samuel asked.
Laura slid several scanned documents across the table.
Financial ledgers.
Lists of offshore companies.
Photographs.
And one handwritten page in Michael Whitmore's unmistakable handwriting.
At the top, he had written only three words.
If I Fail...
Eleanor's hands trembled as she picked it up.
Michael's words were clear despite the years.
Victor Kane is only the visible face. Someone above him finances everything.
If anything happens to me, never stop following the money.
Trust no document that appears too easily.
The greatest danger is not the man everyone fears.
It is the man nobody suspects.
Silence settled over the room.
Samuel slowly exhaled.
"Michael knew."
Laura nodded.
"He knew Victor wasn't the leader."
Ethan looked at the financial records.
"They're incomplete."
Laura smiled faintly.
"They're supposed to be."
"What do you mean?"
"Michael hid only enough evidence to point us in the right direction."
"He expected someone to finish what he started."
Eleanor gently folded the letter.
"He expected us."
Meanwhile, across town, Victor Kane watched the morning news from a luxurious penthouse.
His expression remained calm.
A younger man entered the room.
"They found the microfilm."
Victor nodded.
"I assumed they would."
"Should we move?"
Victor poured himself a cup of coffee.
"No."
"They're still chasing the wrong target."
The younger man hesitated.
"And Claire?"
Victor smiled coldly.
"She's served her purpose."
Back at Whitmore Manor, Claire stood near the window.
She hadn't slept.
She kept replaying Victor's final phone call.
"You are insurance."
She finally understood.
She had never been his partner.
Only another disposable piece.
Ethan approached quietly.
"How are you feeling?"
Claire laughed bitterly.
"That's a strange question."
"Why?"
"Because I don't remember the last time anyone asked how I was feeling."
She looked at him.
"Only what I could do for them."
Ethan remained silent.
For months, perhaps years, he had loved a version of Claire that wasn't entirely real.
Yet standing before him now...
He saw someone different.
Not innocent.
But no longer pretending.
"I'm sorry."
Claire whispered.
Ethan looked surprised.
"For what?"
"For making you doubt your mother."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"She tried to warn you."
"I made sure you wouldn't listen."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"I should have trusted her."
"No."
Claire shook her head.
"You trusted the person you loved."
"That's not weakness."
"I turned it into one."
Before either of them could continue, Martha entered the room.
"Mr. Ethan."
"There's someone asking for you."
"Who?"
"He says he's from Sterling Events."
Ethan frowned.
"The wedding planners?"
Martha nodded.
"He says it's urgent."
Minutes later, a nervous event coordinator sat across from Ethan.
"I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Whitmore."
"But someone called this morning."
"And?"
"They confirmed the wedding date."
Ethan looked confused.
"We never rescheduled it."
The coordinator swallowed.
"They said the ceremony will proceed tomorrow."
Everyone in the room exchanged shocked glances.
Laura immediately stood.
"Who made the call?"
"We thought it was Miss Harper."
The coordinator answered.
"The voice sounded exactly like hers."
Claire looked horrified.
"I never called."
Laura's eyes narrowed.
"It's a trap."
That afternoon, police traced the phone call.
It had originated from a disposable device.
Abandoned less than five minutes later.
Professional.
Careful.
Exactly Victor's style.
Laura gathered everyone.
"He's forcing us into a public event."
Samuel nodded.
"He wants attention somewhere."
"So he can do something somewhere else."
Eleanor looked thoughtfully at the wedding invitation still pinned to the family calendar.
Then something clicked.
"The chapel."
Everyone turned toward her.
"It's not about the wedding."
"It's about what's beneath it."
Samuel's face suddenly turned pale.
"The archives."
He whispered.
"What archives?"
Ethan asked.
Samuel looked at Eleanor.
"Twenty-five years ago, Whitmore Industries stored original legal records beneath St. Andrew's Chapel during renovations."
Eleanor's eyes widened.
"My God..."
"They're still there."
Victor wasn't interested in the ceremony.
He wanted the documents hidden beneath the chapel.
The last original records linking his network to Michael's investigation.
Laura immediately called her tactical team.
"Seal the chapel."
"No one enters without authorization."
That evening, despite the police presence, preparations quietly continued.
Guests believed the wedding had simply been postponed.
Only a handful of people knew the chapel had become the center of a criminal investigation.
As night fell, Claire stood alone inside the empty sanctuary.
Rows of white flowers lined the aisle.
Candles flickered softly.
She imagined herself walking toward Ethan.
A future she had once wanted.
A future built on lies.
One she no longer deserved.
She removed the engagement ring from her finger.
Holding it tightly, she whispered,
"I'm sorry."
Behind her, a familiar voice answered.
"You always apologize too late."
Claire turned sharply.
Victor Kane stood near the entrance.
Perfectly dressed.
Calm as ever.
Two armed men remained behind him.
"I knew you'd come."
Claire said quietly.
Victor smiled.
"I taught you to predict people."
"But not me."
Claire stepped backward.
"The police are everywhere."
Victor shrugged.
"I expected that."
His eyes shifted toward the stone floor beneath the altar.
"They're protecting the building."
"They're not protecting what's inside it."
Without warning, one of Victor's men pressed a hidden switch beneath a wooden pew.
A section of the stone floor slowly slid open.
A concealed passage descended into darkness.
Samuel had been right.
The old archive chamber still existed.
Victor smiled.
"Twenty-two years."
"And no one ever thought to look beneath their feet."
Before he could take another step, a calm voice echoed through the chapel.
"I did."
Everyone turned.
Eleanor stood at the opposite end of the aisle.
Beside her were Ethan, Detective Bennett, Samuel, and a team of armed officers.
Victor laughed softly.
"I was wondering when you'd arrive."
Laura raised her weapon.
"Victor Kane."
"You're under arrest."
Victor didn't move.
Instead, he smiled.
"You still think this story ends with me."
He slowly raised both hands.
"I'll surrender."
The officers moved forward.
Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
Everything seemed over.
Then Victor looked directly at Eleanor.
His smile widened.
"You finally caught the wrong man."
The chapel doors suddenly burst open.
A terrified officer ran inside.
"Detective!"
Laura turned.
"What happened?"
The officer struggled to catch his breath.
"The Chairman..."
"He just entered Whitmore Manor."
Every face in the chapel went pale.
Because everyone had been focused on Victor.
Exactly as he had planned.
The real enemy had just walked into Eleanor's home.
