Chapter 1

My Stepmother Was Hitting My Little Brother When Dad Came Home Early. Then the Police Broke In—and One Officer Pointed His Gun at Dad.
Melissa’s belt struck my brother’s legs before I could cover him.
“Stop!” I screamed, throwing myself over eight-year-old Noah.
The belt hit my back instead.
“You ungrateful little monsters,” our stepmother hissed.
We lived outside Dallas, in the house our mother had decorated before she died.
Dad believed Melissa had saved our family.
He never saw what happened after he left for work.
She slapped us for speaking too loudly.
She locked the pantry when Noah asked for food.
She warned us that Dad would send us away if we complained.
That afternoon, Noah accidentally broke a glass while washing dishes.
Melissa dragged him into the living room and reached for the belt.
“It was an accident,” I begged.
“Then you can share his punishment.”
She ordered us to kneel beside the couch.
Noah was crying so hard he could barely breathe.
I wrapped my arms around him.
“Please,” I whispered. “Dad will be home soon.”
Melissa smiled.
“Your father believes everything I tell him.”
The front door suddenly opened.
Dad stepped inside carrying his suitcase.
He had returned from Chicago two days early.
His smile disappeared when he saw Noah’s bruised legs.
Melissa still had the belt raised above my head.
“What the hell are you doing?” Dad shouted.
She dropped it and immediately started crying.
“They attacked me, Daniel!”
Dad looked at my bleeding lip.
Then he saw the small camera Noah had hidden beneath the bookshelf.
“You recorded this?” he whispered.
Before I could answer, police sirens surrounded the house.
The front door flew open.
Three officers rushed inside with their weapons drawn.
Melissa fell to her knees.
Dad pulled Noah and me behind him.
“I just got home,” he said. “My wife did this.”
The lead officer stared at him, then slowly raised his handcuffs.
“We know who called 911,” he said.

Then he pointed directly at Dad.
“But your wife isn’t the only person we came to arrest.”
