Chapter 1 - The Man in the Black Ford

Forty-three minutes after Willow called her father, the ballroom doors opened again.
This time, nobody laughed.
Michael Donovan walked into the Peninsula Chicago wearing faded jeans, a dark work jacket, and boots still stained with grease from the repair shop.
He looked completely out of place among the tuxedos and diamonds.
He also looked like the only man in the building who was not afraid of the Sterling family.
Lucas saw him first.
His expression shifted from irritation to disbelief.
“You actually called him?”
Willow stood beside the terrace doors, her cheek still red.
Michael crossed the ballroom without answering.
He stopped in front of his daughter.
For several seconds, he simply looked at her face.
His jaw tightened.
“Which hand?”
Willow swallowed.
“Dad.”
“Which hand did he use?”
Lucas stepped forward.
“This is a private family matter.”
Michael slowly turned.
“You stopped having a private family matter when you struck my daughter in front of six hundred witnesses.”
Richard Sterling moved between them.
“Donovan, control yourself.”
Michael looked at him.
Something strange passed between the two older men.
Recognition.
Hatred.
And something deeper.
Richard’s face lost a little color.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Richard said.
Michael almost smiled.
“I’ve heard that from you before.”
Willow stared at her father.
“What does that mean?”
Richard recovered quickly.
“It means your father has always had trouble understanding his place.”
Michael reached inside his jacket.
Several Sterling security guards moved closer.
He did not pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a worn brown envelope.
Richard froze.
Michael held it at his side.
“You remember this?”
For the first time that evening, Richard Sterling looked frightened.
Lucas glanced at his father.
“What is that?”
“Nothing,” Richard said immediately.
Michael’s eyes stayed on him.
“That’s what you called it thirty-one years ago too.”
Willow stepped toward her father.
“Dad, what is going on?”
Michael turned to her.
His voice softened.
“Your mother didn’t just work for Richard Sterling.”
Willow stopped breathing.
Michael looked back at the family who had spent five years telling his daughter she was beneath them.
“She helped build everything they own.”
Richard lunged forward.
“Don’t.”
Michael’s stare hardened.
“And they stole her half of the company after she died.”

The ballroom went silent for the second time that night.
This time, nobody laughed.
