Chapter 24 - EMILY’S HOME

Emily bought her first home at twenty-eight.

Small craftsman house.

Two bedrooms.

Garden.

She used:

Mortgage.

Personal savings.

A trust-approved down payment distribution.

Balanced.

The trustee required planning.

She complained.

“Why can’t I just use my money?”

“Because your grandfather and dad created protections.”

“I’m twenty-eight.”

“Take it up with dead men.”

She laughed.

At closing, she signed every page.

Read all of them.

Of course.

The attorney finally said:

“Most people don’t read the title exceptions this carefully.”

Emily answered:

“My family has issues.”

Accurate.

She gave me a spare key.

Then immediately said:

“This does not mean you can come in whenever.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

“Seriously.”

“I know.”

Home with boundaries.

Daniel would have loved it.

The first time Beth visited, she brought a laundry basket as a housewarming joke.

Empty.

Emily stared.

Beth froze.

“Too much?”

Emily started laughing.

Then filled it with throw blankets.

“It’s useful.”

The story changed because Emily chose the meaning.

Not because everyone forgot.

Later, Emily fostered a dog named Jasper.

He destroyed a pillow.

She called me.

“Do I make him earn shelter?”

“Absolutely.”

“Mom.”

“Sorry.”

She laughed.

Humor without threat.

Good.
