Chapter 6 - THE VIDEO THE WORLD DIDN'T SEE

At nine the next morning, our attorney released the full CCTV footage.

No dramatic music.

No captions.

No editing.

Just truth.

Preston walking toward Sophie’s jacket.

Preston checking whether anyone was watching.

Preston slipping his phone into the pocket.

Preston later pulling out that same phone and accusing her.

Then me saying no.

Then Preston ripping the oak board from its stand.

Then the strike.

The internet changed direction in less than an hour.

People who had called Sophie a thief deleted posts.

News networks stopped using my parents’ statement.

Sponsors connected to Whitmore Hospitality began asking questions.

One clip spread faster than everything else.

Preston smiling after finding the phone.

That tiny smile told the story better than any lawyer could.

Police arrested Preston that afternoon.

He was charged in connection with the assault and evidence tampering.

He entered the courthouse through a side entrance.

Reporters still found him.

“Why did you frame your niece?”

“Did your parents help you?”

“Was this about the trust?”

Preston said nothing.

His bride, Bianca, did.

She stood on the courthouse steps and announced.

“My husband made a mistake under extreme family pressure.”

Husband.

They had completed the ceremony before the reception.

She was legally tied to him.

For now.

Bianca continued.

“Evelyn has spent years creating conflict.”

I watched from home.

My brother was still using women to speak for him.

Then Detective Alvarez called.

“Bianca wants to talk privately.”

“Why?”

“She says she has information.”

“About Preston?”

“And your parents.”

We met at a police office.

Bianca arrived wearing sunglasses despite the cloudy day.

She removed them.

Her eyes were swollen.

“I didn’t know he would hit Sophie.”

I stared at her.

“That sentence suggests you knew something else.”

She looked down.

“I knew about the phone.”

My hands tightened.

“You knew he was going to frame my daughter.”

“He told me it was a prank.”

I almost stood.

Detective Alvarez intervened.

“Let her finish.”

Bianca’s voice shook.

“He said Sophie would be caught with the phone.”

“Then everyone would laugh.”

“He said Evelyn would get angry and leave.”

“That was all.”

“You believed him?”

“He was nervous about the trust vote.”

“Preston said your family was trying to steal the hotel company.”

“My family?”

I laughed.

“I am his family.”

Bianca wiped her eyes.

“I know.”

“No.”

“You know now.”

She accepted that.

Then she reached into her purse.

“I recorded something.”

“What?”

“Preston and your father.”

She placed her phone on the table.

Audio played.

My father’s voice.

“If Evelyn refuses to sign after the scandal, we use Daniel.”

Preston answered.

“The fake loan?”

My stomach turned.

Father.

“Yes.”

“Harold already prepared it.”

Preston laughed.

“And if she still won’t?”

My father’s answer was immediate.

“Then we take Sophie.”

I stopped breathing.

Bianca paused the recording.

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

She whispered.

“I think your father planned to challenge your custody.”
